The whole of Ukraine was Russian until comparatively recently and Russian companies still own many of its resources, which are staffed by Russians. Kiev's treatment of these resources and people have led Russia to reclaim them.

  16. @ The Ukrainian National Republic was an idea more than a country. The Bolsheviks actually altered its claimed boundaries slightly when they took over, but that is hardly the point. There is no history of prolonged unity, other than that imposed by the SU, in the history of the country called Ukraine.
