So a conceited buffoon who has a Winston Churchill complex who helps plunge distant countries into a bloody and needless war is an object of admiration? Is that it?

@marcopalazzo9349 It wasn't capitulation. It was a compromise.

@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 The compromise was contained in the Minsk treaties, namely that Donbass should become independent and thus not be included in any future treaties between Ukraine and Europe and the US.

@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 The Minsk treaties were drawn up with the express purpose of allowing Ukraine time to find ways of granting regional autonomy to the two Donbass oblasts. This Ukraine failed to do and instead used the time to re-arm itself, with NATO help. Russia's response under these circumstances was completely understandable.

@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 I don't think "we" know that at all. Russia's aim throughout has been to retain economic control over resources which it has developed and invested in over many decades. Autonomy for Donbass would have achieved this. As it is actual occupation and inclusion of the territory in the Russian Federation has become the alternative.

@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 How can Russia have ignored Minsk? The ball was in Ukraine's court. It was Ukraine which built up its army, using billion dollar investments from NATO, as has now been freely admitted. Russia has had little choice but to exercise a military option, diplomatic solutions having been rejected. It had no need to prepare for a second offensive, as you call it. The SMO was a pre-emptive strike utilising existing resources.

@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 This is nonsense. An absurd historical analogy. Russia has no wish to expand its territories, only to continue to maintain its borders and retain economic benefits accrued over many years. Strictly speaking Russia did not occupy Ukrainian territory. Wagner was created in order to unify and support Donbass separatists and is not an arm of the Russian state, but a private company. Russia would have been quite content for Donbass to become an autonomous buffer state and continue to supply Russia with minerals. Ukraine, however, had entered into deals with Western agencies to transfer these resources to them. That really is all this war is about. The tragedy is that it now looks quite likely that Russia will continue to control Donbass and many thousands of people will have died to no purpose.

@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 It's not so much about expanding its territories, but getting territories back. Ukraine is largely a Russian creation. Giving the new country of Ukraine the same boundaries as the SSR of Ukraine was a huge mistake. As long as the new country maintained close relations with Russia though, all was well. But joining the EU and NATO would not only put it into the enemy camp but deprive Russia of vast mineral resources in these areas. These resources were developed by Russia, and are largely worked with Russian labour. Russia can hardly be blamed for not wanting them to be stolen from under its nose.
