@boink800 Fighting or dead. They weren't actual Syrians, but Russians who had fought in the war in Syria.

@boink800 Essentially it is. It's called getting help from your allies.

@SpencerGreen-r2o The principle is exactly the same. You are merely making subjective assessments as to the morals and abilities of the participants.
3
@jordancobb7553 You're all hat and no cattle, partner.
2
@goodfortunedj The principle is the same. It is no more a sign of weakness for Putin to welcome North |Korea than it was for Britain to welcome Americans in World War II. As to their relative fighting capability - well, that remains to be seen. The N Koreans gave America a lot to think about back in the 1950's, I recall.
2
Just the same in World War II when all those Americans joined the English.

@insanebe1 I agree ethnic is not strictly speaking the right word to use, but it is a useful label in this context to emphasise the difference between being Russian and Ukrainian in the sense you mention.
1
@michaelmadsen3696 Absolute nonsense. The Russian population of Crimea has been around 70% for decades. There are very few Ukrainians, who are actually outnumbered by Tatars. The Russians were welcomed with open arms in 2014 and very few people indeed felt the need to flee.
1
@michaelmadsen3696 The Russians beat the Germans on their own.
1
@boink800 They are ethnic Russians. Crimea is Russian. The people are direct descendants of Russians with Russian attitudes, Russian religion and Russian customs. They are Russian in the same way that the Scots are Scots and not English.
1
@michaelmadsen3696 Russia did quite well on its own, although much aided by American equipment. They got to Berlin first, don't forget.
1
@boink800 The Syrian veterans are, I believe, fighting in Donetsk right now.
1
@nownotlater888 The population of Crimea is around 70% ethnic Russian, as are the industrial and mining areas of Eastern Ukraine.

@davidbrancaleone3039 Only if it had set by a fool, which is not entirely impossible. You need to explain how my arguments are illogical before you can make such a claim.
1
@davidbrancaleone3039 I am not Russian, so I'm neither winning nor losing but as an outside observer it is clear to me that slowly but surely Russia is achieving its prime military objective, namely conquering and retaining Donbass. To do so it has been necessary to open other theatres of operation in order to attempt to reduce the Ukrainian forces which have been supplied and trained by the West in order to support Western commercial ambitions in the area.
1
@davidbrancaleone3039 Russia is merely trying to retain control of resources to which it is, in my view, morally entitled.
1
@MagpieOz I was referring more to the 16 million or so American troops who took part in World War II. Perhaps we are at cross-purposes.
1
@paulcarfantan6688 Lots of people are dying in Donetsk. A needless tragedy.
1
@paulcarfantan6688 It was a joint effort, certainly. It's pointless playing the "what if" game with history but I think its pretty silly to suggest that without America Russia would have been conquered by Germany.
1
@insanebe1 We are not in too great a divergence of opinion. The amount of territory ceded to Russia after the conflict is ended will very much depend upon the state of play at that point. What is significant, I feel, is that the longer Ukraine holds out, the more it will lose. I tend to disagree , however, that Putin has any interest in conquering territory purely for the sake of it. The Georgia question is more or less settled and as long as Armenia and Kazakstan stay outside the Western sphere of influence they can continue to operate semi-independently.
1
@davidbrancaleone3039 Fantasy.
1
@davidbrancaleone3039 This sounds like desperation to me. Is this meaningless gibberish supposed to impress us?
1
Time Radio is all about cheating. Quite amusing really.

Kharkiv is a sideshow. Russia doesn't want it particularly, other than somewhere to tie up Ukrainians. The real war is happening to the south-west where Russia is doggedly pushing through Ukraine's defences on its way to the Donbass border.
