Total ignorance on display here.

No. That's Joe Biden you're thinking of.
6
Because it isn't?
5
Do you really think NATO would risk nuclear annihilation just for the sake of silly old Ukraine?
5
@LudvigIndestrucable Has it crossed your mind that Russia doesn't WANT to be considered a threat? Maybe it just doesn't want to be hassled by greedy Westerners - but is prepared to stick up for itself when pushed too far?
3
@nhjhbmkuy7173 Putin has no such ambitions.
3
@nhjhbmkuy7173 No he didn't. He said that while restoring the borders of the Russian empire seemed a wonderful idea, it was impractical and even undesirable to do so. And the Baltic States were indeed once part of the Russian Empire, but they are no longer and are likely to stay that way.
3
@jimmyclark9595 A somewhat simplistic and ill-informed view. Putin is protecting Russia's borders and economy from Western aggression. Not everyone rolls over for America.
2
@philipmain5701 I don't think he has lost face at all. He has increased his respect in the eyes of the many nations who are resentful of US hegemony and Russia's business dealings have merely gone under the counter. And if he does keep control of Donbass that mean an income of billions.
2
@timonsolus No different to America then.
2
@nhjhbmkuy7173 To prevent them becoming bases for enemies and to maintain important economic ties. These countries are connected to Russia in far more real sense than those countries conquered by the Soviet Union. Their histories are intertwined with that of Russia. Russia is content for them to be ruled independently, but draws the line at them being taken over by foreign powers, ie America.
2
@A4Natty It's going to win. No doubt of it.
1
He had little choice. It was either that of face total humiliation and the loss of billions of dollars a year in income.
1
He had little choice in the end.
1
@ostevoostevo1592 But he had little choice, really.
1
@petertomsic8082 It is Ukraine's border which is in dispute. There is good case to be made for Crimea and Eastern Ukraine not really being part of Ukraine, other than on a map. The maps are now being redrawn. They are only 30 years old, anyway.
1
@philipmain5701 Huh?
1
@stephenhill545 It isn't. But trying to take over Eastern Ukraine's multi-trillion mineral extraction industry is.
1
@fainitesbarley2245 They haven't, but they have attempted to undermine pro-Russian governments in countries such as Georgia and Ukraine, which Russia regards as being almost as threatening as military invasion.
1
@fainitesbarley2245 The Russian Federation is very different to the Russia of Soviet days. It just doesn't suit America's warmongers to accept this.
1
Because it all just made-up nonsense?
1
Putin is winning though.
1
@nhjhbmkuy7173 Its only threats have been attempts to prevent the West taking over its strategic and commercial interests, as in Ukraine . What other European nations has it threatened or attacked?
1
@nhjhbmkuy7173 Whatever moral judgements may be made the fact is that Russia can not and will not allow its economic ties with these countries to be broken. America is on the constant look out for new markets for its products and new sources of raw materials and Russia is simply preventing America from muscling in on its territory. If the stakes are high enough, as in Ukraine, Russia is prepared to go to war over the issue.
1
@nhjhbmkuy7173 I don't think Russia has any desire or intention of invading them.
1
@ozyrob1 Which is why NATO would be foolish to try to press it any further.
1
@ozyrob1 Russians are no more gangsters than Americans. In fact America has bullied an coerced far more countries than Russia has. Russia's position on Ukraine is a very valid one and it has spent at least twenty years trying to ratify it peacefully. If Ukraine had been left to its own devices instead of agreeing to become another US poodle a peaceful solution would have been found and tens of thousands of mostly young men would not have dies for no other purpose than to attempt to advance American commercial interests.
1
@nhjhbmkuy7173 Russia agrees. The Russian Federation under Putin has given up all claims on Poland and the Baltic States.
1
@ozyrob1 But Russians are not gangsters. Putin has spent twenty years trying to sort out the Ukrainian situation peacefully. He has been forced into grim necessity of war because of continued Western interference in the relationship between the two countries.
1
@ozyrob1 There has been very little gangsterish about Russia's efforts in Ukraine. Putin has spent twenty years trying to find a peaceful solution to the anomalies that exist and has only been forced into the grim necessity of war by continued Western interference.
1
@jimmyclark9595 Not as simple as that. Ukraine's highly profitable mining industry is Russian - paid for and operated by Russians. Russia doesn't want to see it handed over to Western companies . The invasion is a last-ditch attempt to prevent this.
1
@jimmyclark9595 It is merely protecting its interests.
