  1. Optimism and second sight in one package. I'm sure the Kremlin has made allowances for the possibility of further aid, and when it has come it does not appear to be quite what it says on the tin. Ukraine will only get just under $14billion initially, some in whatever old stuff depleted US armouries can spare, and the rest in credit to buy on the open market. Russia is ramping up military production at a rate of knots and is already punching big holes Ukraine's lines. This loan (and it is a loan) from the US may slow Russia down, but that will only mean more needless deaths. It can only extend the war, not help bring it to a conclusion.

  2. Pretty much. Ukraine gets some old stuff America has lying around and a few billion to buy back some of the gear they flogged off to the Arabs.
