  3. I disagree. The situation in Crimea was entirely different in that the population is predominantly Russian, and welcomed the Russian "invasion" with open arms. Putin could not possibly have expected the same result in Ukraine as a whole. His objective in this war has been to destroy the US and NATO financed Ukrainian army, created post Minsk. This has now largely been achieved and Russia is advancing to take over those areas of Donbass not yet under its control. The Ukrainian "advances" across the Dnieper in Kherson are a mere sideshow and represent no real threat. Indeed, they are encouraged, since they divert Ukrainian resources away from the Donbass front, where the real war is happening. Sanctions are continuing to have only minimal effect. Russia has a criminal economy and its entrepreneurs delight in finding ways around these restrictions. In fact these measures have driven Russia and other countries, resentful of Western dominance, into new alliances, as typified by the growth of the BRICS group, which may well eventually present a real alternative to US hegemony and thus hasten the collapse of the dollar - or at least undermine its status as the world's reserve currency.
