  1. The Ukrainians have taken virtually undefended farmland of no great value. The Russians have taken very heavily defended and extremely valuable mineral-rich land. This is about geology, not geography.

  4.  @SlavaUkraini85  That must one of the daftest things I've heard in a while. Donbass is sitting on at least $13trillion of coal, gas, oil and rare earth minerals. What sort of human resources does Ukraine have that competes with that?

This excursion would seem to serve no strategic purpose, since I doubt that whatever steps Russia will take against will involve removing troops from the front, where they are currently making considerable advances. As for Putin "looking weak" I daresay he can weather the disapproval of whoever might imagine this to be so.

  11.  @7171jay  I don't think that will even be necessary. If Russia does decide to respond there will be no need to move troops away from the front line. They might give up on Kharkiv, and thus free some Ukrainian forces to help repel the Russian advance in Donetsk I suppose, but even this is doubtful. More likely is that the Ukrainians will be left without support and be forced to retreat. Even if they stay, possession of this area will be of little benefit in any forthcoming peace negotiations.

  14.  mrb.9822  It makes him look nothing of the sort. This was a very bizarre thing for Ukraine to do. The border is virtually undefended and all the Ukrainians are doing is rumbling along shelling towns and villages that have no strategic value.
