@MutatedPizzaBoi It really is a sign of intellectual poverty and historical ignorance to constantly equate the present situation in Ukraine with the situation in Germany in the 1930s.

I think you are making rathe too much of what is basically a minor border dispute.

But Putin is quite correct. The present county of Ukraine is simply the territory of the former Soviet Socialist Republic of Ukraine - which was a country in name only, but in fact a construct of the Bolsheviks and later of Krushchev, who added Crimea in 1954. It was an administrative unit of the Soviet Union, largely controlled by Russia and those parts appended to it have little or no historical, linguistic or cultural connection with any place called "Ukraine", which is itself an ambiguous term covering a wide spectrum of varying territories in the region. The fact that the parts added by the Soviets are exceptionally rich in mineral wealth is the key to this issue. They have been invested in by Russia, and worked by Russian labour for centuries and I personally can fully understand Russian objections to having them spirited away by a process of treaties and agreements signed by the government in Kiev.

@andreasc.2182 But Russia has just lost an empire and has realised that it is better off without it. There's about as much chance of Russia invading Poland as there is of Britain invading India.

@raspberryleaf3741 Most of them, it appears.

@andreasc.2182 Rubbish. The Russian Empire has collapsed and there is no reason to suppose that it will expand again.

@retorenfer8702 Sure, Russia is led by a charismatic orator in his late forties who has declared on paper that he wishes to expand his country in all directions and exterminate the Jews. Russia has just lost a world war and is in a state of extreme poverty, in the grip of a treaty designed by its conquerors. The similarities with Germany at the time of the Sudetenland crisis are quite uncanny

Ever watched Times Radio?

I'm afraid Ukraine's front lines are crumbling fast. And if NATO goes to war with Russia it will be due entirely to Western territorial and commercial ambitions.

He has done pretty well, when you look at it. And without becoming another US lackey, like Britain.

I see him more as the bent cop who really runs things. And he's a good enough historian to realise that empires don't really ever get recreated.
