Out with the old - in with the new! I love it!

@ There are a number of fascinating videos about the new, rebuilt Mariupol available on YouTube. I recommend them.

@nobbynobbs8182 They don't show the same handful of blocks at all. There is extensive drone coverage of much of the city. showing extensive rebuilding. And Ukraine was responsible for much of the damage - and for many civilian deaths.

@ But it is true. Both sides fought there and both sides destroyed buildings. The Ukrainians, in fact, followed a scorched earth policy and destroyed everything as they retreated. It has taken the Russians years to clear some areas, especially the steelworks, of mines and booby traps. Mariupol was (and is) a city with a substantial Russian population. Not many Germans in London or Stalingrad.

@ Practically everyone in Mariupol speaks Russian as a first language - and a considerable portion of the population IS Russian following Russian customs, holidays and heritage and have families in Russia. This applies to large parts of Eastern and Southern Ukraine, which were colonised by Russians when coal and iron ore was discovered there in large quantities. The original inhabitants were Tatars, not Ukrainians. Such Ukrainians that are there arrived later, largely to farm previously barren steppe which had been fertilised by modern methods.

@diatonicdelirium1743 It isn't a question of blame, it's a question of sticking to the facts. When cities become war zones they tend to get destroyed. This is especially true if they have been previously fortified, as is the case with many towns and cities in Donbass. The background to the war in Ukraine is far from being the simplistic fairy tale of good v. evil that is presented to us in the West. Russia is merely trying to regain territory mistakenly handed over to Ukraine in 1991.

@diatonicdelirium1743 You have to ask who made up this so-called "international law" and to what end. America doesn't get to automatically decide what is lawful and what isn't, nor where a country's borders are. You can't violate a memorandum. This document so many people wave about is simply the minutes of a series of meetings and is not legally binding -even under international law. And even if it was Ukraine broke it first by negotiating to join NATO. My point is that there are two sides to this argument, and Russia has a very good case for acting as it has done.

@diatonicdelirium1743 The Russia that agreed to these terms is not the Russia of today, and the situation has been radically changed by Ukraine's relationship with the EU. And the Budapest memorandum is a meaningless piece of paper anyway. Treaties made between Ukraine and the EU, such as the 2021 Memorandum of Understanding, seriously affect Russian interests in Eastern Ukraine. Russians have invested money and labour in the Donbass mining and steelmaking industries for generations. That is why they are there. Past "agreements" signed by others in the confusion following the collapse of the SU cannot be thrust under Russian noses and cited as a reason for theft.
