There is both method and humour in his madness though. It's just that you have to be a special kind of person to see this.

... but what about the plot twist?

@karlgunterwunsch1950 That would be too much in character!

They have been bought by Ireland and boiled down to make Guinness.

He will rescind or alter this. Either he is, as so many think, just not all there, or there could be method in his madness. George Soros introduced the concept of "reflexivity" into finance several decades ago, most spectacularly when in 1992 he almost broke the Bank of England by floating a rumour which caused the pound to crash and walked away with well over a billion dollars in profit after buying sterling on credit and shifting it into stable currencies. Trump might be using his position to use reflexivity on steroids to create feedback loops which gradually put the US economy on a more secure footing in the long term. Instead of printing dollars and pouring them into foreign economies through the mass purchase of unnecessary goods, America will become more self-reliant, enabling it to reduce both borrowing and taxes. I think it is a big mistake to take the tariffs at their face value. They are shock tactics and none are designed to be anything like permanent.

@korolev-musictobashbrexitby I was thinking more of not being a literal-minded, humourless, unimaginative lefty.

@EricWenders I have a different impression - but I must say I do find some of his actions hard to explain.

@tomvanaarle2622 I dunno where you got your degree in psychiatry, but you ought to ask for your money back.

@EricWenders I think he's actually LOOKING pretty good. He's lost weight and seems very cheerful, if tired from time to time. I don't know enough about economics to be able to decide firmly what this strategy is exactly supposed to achieve, but I think it is totally wrong to put it down to stupidity, or attention-seeking or anything like that. That's just TDS showing through.

@EricWenders As far as I can see there is little intention of making these tariffs permanent. They strike me as being little more than scare tactics. Once victims are sufficiently rattled he will lift or modify them. I am reminded of Soros and his use of reflexivity to manipulate the markets. This could be something like that, although on a much grander scale.
