  15.  @timothyharris4708  I recommend you take at a look at a recent contribution to this thread by James valpuesta, who puts the case for the tactics used far better than I. Others with a knowledge of military history also hold to the view. Sun Tzu's "Art of War" details the technique also. Setting fire to many villages while concentrating on surrounding your main target is designed to divert and weaken the enemy. It has the added advantage - clearly illustrated by your own reaction - of making the enemy believe he is winning because you have left the villages without sacking them. The actual armaments used and the end results give added credence. Russia could have bombed Kiev into oblivion. Instead it surrounded it and pounded away at the suburbs with relatively light artillery. The end result has been a considerable loss of ground war materiel by the Ukrainians. Russia has lost a lot too, more than it hoped but no more than in their worse case scenario. As long as they settle on a front between themselves and the Ukrainians in the west and north they can defend it with missile and air cover and Ukraine has little left to attack it with. In chess terms, phase one has involved several sacrifices, but it has left Russia in a stronger position than Ukraine. As for the new-look world order as outlined by Lavrov, it addresses the whole concept of "sovereignty" as much as anything. It is a word that has been tossed about a lot lately but the somewhat clumsy definition currently prevalent merely adds up to "you are a country because America says you are". That's not good enough. Other criteria come into play. And yes, in some instances they do include an adherence to a national religion- at least on the surface. You do not seem to realise that Russia -along with China, Brazil, India and South Africa - are the strongest emerging world economies at the moment. America is crumbling from within and will have to be replaced as a major world power before very long. The BRICS alliance might well fit the bill.

  16.  @timothyharris4708  James valpuesta James valpuesta 12 hours ago I have family & friends in both Ukraine & Russia so I get to read news and learn of facts that are censured or ignored by our media. So I will add a little more fact and context. I do not support Russia's invasion. The invasion of another country by a super power is immoral and against all laws but the UK always supports the USA when it does this.... The Moskva was hit by missiles or by some other means. Russia admitted this two days after saying it spontaneously caught fire. The Moskva was 40 years old, did not have a sprinkler system like modern ships and was well overdue for the scrap yard. It is an embarrassing but not a great loss. Check out some war strategy books. Kiev and Kharkiv could not be taken with the puny forces they were surrounded by. It has taken a force of 15 - 20,000 to take the super heavily defended Mauripol by Russian forces which was defended by the renowned force of the Nazi Azzov trained and supplied to NATO standards by Canadian & British soldiers and our SAS !! Mouripol has been under control mostly by Russian forces for the last two weeks. We only get this information these past few days. Two weeks ago Macron was zooming Putin asking him to allow a special extraction of personnel. Putin refused. There are numerous western NATO military personnel trapped in the Azvostal steel Plant. Probably French and others... This would seem to be a good reason not to eradicate the plant. Wait for the embarrassment when Russia parades the western personel that will eventually emerge from here. The Ukrainian Army has lost eight scarce helicopters trying to evacuate guys from the plant. Two Frenchmen have been picked up alive from one downed helicopter. A hired Turkish dry goods ship was disabled and captured trying to sneak in to a nearby docking area to evacuate guys also ten days ago... For a force to invade a fortified city you need to outnumber the defenders 3 or 4 to one: see Mouripol events or look up typical American battles in Iraq. Russia's army surrounding Kiev and Kharkiv a few weeks ago were purely diversionary to stop Ukraine adding to its major forces in the South East Donbass. Russia's entire invading forces so far have just numbered 190,000 - 200,000. Russia has no intention of taking over the entire Ukraine. Russian forces are presently slowly but surely eradicating the Ukrainian forces as I write this. Wether this takes 4-6 or eight weeks is just according to how much food and munitions the Ukrainian Army has. The result will just be the same. Ukraine has no fuel bases left ; all bombed out and all supply lines are cut. Russia managed to ensure Ukraine spread it forces by defending Kiev and Kharkiv and Odessa etc. Unfortunately Zilensky is a prisoner of the USA NATO and The EU and is not allowed to make his own decisions. He has not been allowed to agree to a peace treaty and save Ukrainianale youth. Never mind he has his $55 million Vila in Florida to escape to or his £35 million villa in Switzerland when the USA decide they need to extract him and a nice amount of money of shored by the CIA and Kolomoisky for him. Russia is suffering inflation and a few shortages but they will get over it in 6-12 months. Putin has increased pensions and other social service payments. Russia has a mega balance of payments surplus despite having half of its central bank funds stolen by the USA $ 320 billion !! If Europe stops buying Russian fuel within a year it's industry will and economy will implode. Last month Germany announced 30.9 % cost inflation at the factory gate. Germany is the powerhouse of European Industry. Just wait and see what will happen if Russia decides to retaliate against western sanctions by imposing its own by refusing to sell us foodstuffs and fuel and timber and metals and and.... Russia Holds the ace cards. There are plenty of customers around the world in need of their commodities.
