@jonsteele7227 I think I'm right in saying that Smith's Law allows for anomalous mutations but which, by the very nature, burn themselves out relatively rapidly. I take your point about the low covid death rate, but I think it must be more than co-incidental. As a respiratory infection it only causes death in those whose physical condition cannot withstand its effects on lung tissue and consequent complications. Paradoxically enough it seems that affluence creates such conditions in terms of increased age, diabetes, obesity etc. As for HIV I imagine that its very limited modes of transmission put it into a somewhat different category.

Smith's Law of Declining Virulence states that viruses inevitably tend to become more transmissible and less harmful. Rogue variants occasionally crop up which are generally the result of some environmental change. Such an environmental change has been the ham-fisted attempts to control spread through inadequate and ludicrous measures such as masking and lockdowns. This has, in all probability, resulted in the emergence of the deadlier Delta variant. Evolution has however seen Omicron develop in another species, probably mice, and this has resulted in the virus maintaining its natural progression according to Smith's Law.

@markwelch3564 Natural laws, unlike man-made laws, do not require police enforcement.

@markwelch3564 I think it's a little more than intermittent. And if it was basically incorrect viruses would have wiped out most mammalian life many millennia ago. Nature seeks balance and symbiosis as a general rule. Even a tiny advantage gives a viral variant a rapid route to dominance. Spreading rapidly while allowing hosts to remain ambulant is surely such an advantage. There are, of course, infections which transcend the principle. The Spanish flu and the several plagues of past history certainly do so. Fortunately, however, it seems that Omicron has put Covid 19 back on track.

My local Conservative branch has taken to marching through the streets in black uniforms and beating up Jews.

People who would have died anyway. They just happened to have had covid at the time.

Why bother even with these? The quicker everyone gets it and gets over it the better.

What simple precautions do you have in mind? Nothing has worked so far. Vaccination can mitigate severity, as indeed can proper diet and general health. Preventing infection is, however, well-nigh impossible.

You lefty bedwetters just won't give up on this will you?
