A Different Bias

This is why means testing pensioners is a good idea - so that only those without private pensions qualify for extra benefits such as free transport and the winter fuel allowance.

I suppose some might suggest that the single mother on income support hasn't contributed a great deal to the public purse, whereas a pensioner who has worked all their life has probably paid in more than such a woman might earn in her entire lifetime.
2
@M3PH11 Much like child allowance then.
2
@briankerrison8504 No. That globalism you're thinking of.
2
@MazzaEliLi7406 I think there is a cheap and ready solution already to hand. Local authorities means-test for housing benefit and council tax relief. Their findings are readily available, surely?
2
@nickryder9669 I don't think there's a hierarchy. All require support to varying degrees, but at least OAPs have paid for it from their own pockets.
1
@piccalillipit9211 And provided wage-earners with homes and the incentives to go out to work and pay taxes. Are those the ones you mean?
1
@piccalillipit9211 Neither are. Never said anything different. It was you who made the initial distinction.
1
@piccalillipit9211 I'm one myself, so perhaps a little prejudiced. Having paid around a third of my income to the government over the course of my working life I do feel entitled to some simple comforts at my time of life.
1
@jasonmcclatchie6877 But a benefit which has been earned, I'm sure you must agree.
1
@nickryder9669 Or longer.
1
Good job this isn't actually what Badenoch is saying then, isn't it?
1
@DavidMoxham957 Including Labour of course. Is there no escape?
1
@catherinewilson3880 Don't you dare call me a Tory!
1
@DavidMoxham957 The insane YouTube algorithm is giving me even more grief than usual today, but I suppose you must be referring to me suggesting that Labour will just as easily bin the pensions system as the Tories might? The fact is, of course, then the proportion of non-productive old buggers like me, draining the national purse is now so large that there isn't enough coming in from taxes in younger workers to keep us in crisps and thermal underwear. Labour is no longer a socialist party, but a mere tool of the globalists and quite capable of, say, colluding in introducing a deadly virus which targets the elderly or reducing pensions to such a degree that we either starve or freeze to death.

No. That's immigrants.
1
@allip4226 They didn't cause the mess. They just were hopeless at doing anything about it.
1
@CupOfSweetTea Britain is collapsing for a number of reasons; the failure of infrastructure due to unprecedented numbers of often undocumented and uncounted immigrants is one of them.
1
@CupOfSweetTea No no impact at all then? Unplanned for population increases do not causes services to crumble under the weight?
1
This is a crude and inaccurate assessment on Phil's part. All Badenoch wants to do is means test pensioners so that the winter fuel allowance might be returned to those who need it, not to ALL pensioners. This is surely better than Labours blanket (ha!) cut which has led to genuine hardship among poorer pensioners.
1
@ Means testing for the triple lock is no different to means testing for pensions as a whole. There are various ways by which poorer and more deserving pensioners could be separated from those more fortunate, all varying in cost and efficiency. The winter fuel allowance is NOT means tested for the elderly. Those who currently qualify are merely those generally between 60 and 65 who get Pension Credit as opposed to unemployment benefit if they are out of work, although there may be other smaller categories of those who have somehow managed to avoid paying NI contributions all their lives, either through cunning or perhaps because they are - shall we say - recent arrivals to the country.
1
@ Well it was a blanket cut which could well have led to an increase in the sale of blankets.
1
@ Still in love with me, I see.

@markhackett2302 I'm only contrarian to the views expressed in channels like this one. I can bung a post on GB News or somesuch and get up to a thousand likes. But I'd much rather have decent argument.
