She probably had the same lingering infection, in all fairness. In England only 50 or so people thought to have actually caught covid twice.

It really is just a gesture, you know. Only tight fitting masks of N95 standard and above are any use, and even they are far from 100% effective. New variants seem to emerge as the result of time, rather than of increased case numbers. The chances are high that all viable variants have already existed, perhaps several times over. They need time and opportunity to emerge as dominant, and mitigation measures provide just that.

This rather assumes that people don't grow older to replace the elderly who have died.

Do try to keep up. With vaccines reducing symptoms the less we do the better, since the more people catching covid and thus becoming immune the quicker herd immunity is reached.

This has to be put into context. The majority of those who have died have been very elderly indeed, and many of them could have been expected to die very soon anyway.

@patrickh8602 Pretty much. Everyone dies, and if you have had a long life you have had a good deal. The death of a child is infinitely more tragic than the death of someone in their nineties, and therefore far more important.

@tk5782 So 89-year olds never get to be 90 and 91 year olds get bigger pensions and cost more to keep alive? Is that it? In any case, if it was a plan it has severely backfired. The DWP, realising that the cull will indeed mean a reduction in the amount of benefits projected for 2021, went over the figures and realised that married couples in certain age groups had been underpaid for years. The backdated sums will amount to literally billions!
