I have just seen him arriving at Trump's door. He looked as scared a mouse coming up against a big ole cat..

Exactly. This war has been almost exclusively been about getting hold of Ukraine's high quality and easily accessible mineral resources. Bribery and war have resulted in chaos. Realistic deals acknowledging Russia's historic ownership of many of these resources should bring a lasting peace.

@fitzstv8506 In this case historic ownership means continuing historic ownership. Most of the mining and manufacturing industries in Eastern Ukraine are owned by Russian companies. A "sovereign UN registered state" is a glib and meaningless phrase when compared with historical and economic realities. Giving the new country of Ukraine the same boundaries as the SSR of Ukraine was a mistake which must be rectified.

@fitzstv8506 Countries are created through lengthy processes, not by arbitrary decision. There has never been a country called Ukraine, unless you count the brief and ill-defined People's Republic of 1918/21 or think that Stalin making the SSR of Ukraine a "country" was anything other than a trick to get another seat on the UN. Saying something is so doesn't make it so. Large sections of Eastern Ukraine have large Russia populations and have much of their industry in Russian ownership. This territory was included in the SSR for purely administrative reasons and the anomalies and difficulties resulting from including it the new country of Ukraine are at the root of this present dreadful war - and they won't go away until these territories are wholly or in part restored to Russia.

@fitzstv8506 Negotiations failed. They went on for years. Ukraine refused to compromise, believing that the US and NATO countries would protect it. Faced with such intransigence, Russia really had little choice but to invade in 2022 or, in 2014, ensure that Russian interests and Russian people in Crimea and Donbass were protected from Ukraine's depredations.

Yes. And it was one of the main factors in starting this war. The 2021 deal made Russia's position impossible.

@ It's not propaganda though. It is merely the correction of several widely-held misapprehensions.

@ Yup.

Putin doesn't want all of Ukraine, just the parts which he regards (with some justification) as being essentially Russian. Once a new border is agreed then there will be no need for any future conflict.

I stopped listening the moment Phil said "Donald Trump has no objections to Putin invading Europe on a large scale." This is not political commentary. It is psychotic ranting. By setting up deals with Ukraine and Russia at the same time Trump is not only ensuring a supply of cheap minerals to the US, but laying the foundations for a lasting peace in Europe - a peace which your precious EU has already shattered with its pernicious interference in Ukraine's affairs.

Ukraine has lost the war. The only question is how much historically Russian territory Putin will be content with.
