What's going to happen when your draconian restrictions are lifted, do you suppose?(If they ever are!)

New Zealand's (and Australia's)escape from covid has been truly remarkable. One can't help wondering what the future holds, however. Since it is clear that the vaccines provide only temporary and far from universal protection - and very little indeed for the seriously vulnerable - a population with no natural immunity through infection can be expected to suffer quite severe consequences once the virus takes hold That is inevitable, even with the draconian, police-state style measures currently in force in these countries, even if they continue indefinitely.

@andrewbogle3350 Every cloud has a silver lining. Perhaps I was wrong to group NZ with prison camp Australia - still, are you happy to go on like this forever?

Such a shame your policies seem to involve beating up old ladies.

82.5% of the UK population over the age of 16 has been fully vaccinated. As you are aware controversy still exists over the wisdom and necessity of vaccinating pre-pubescent children.

The death rate in the UK is currently more than 18% above the five-year average for the time of year. Interestingly, more than half the "extra" deaths (around 1,000 a week) are from causes unrelated to covid. Why should that be, I wonder?

@carlossaraiva8213 I cannot myself decide if the NHS has been overwhelmed by the pandemic, or if the measures we have taken to contain it have not created more problems than they have solved.

Getting infected, but not becoming seriously ill, is a very good thing because it creates immunity. The more healthy immune people there are the more difficult it is for the virus to reach someone who is vulnerable and might die.

Very well said - apart from the last bit. Phil and his chums are just misguided.

In fact there around 2,000 covid deaths a day in the US. The death rate per head of population is slightly greater than that of the UK.

Remind me how many cities there are in Ireland with overcrowded populations of frequently multi-generational families. (82% of the UK population over 16 are fully-vaccinated, by the way.)
