Why are socialists angry about reduction in cheap labour from abroad? Just asking.

@Main Switch I hear what you are saying. Another reason why Eastern European craftsmen are so evident in the UK is the undoubted fact that they work harder and longer hours. Small building contractors and the like however will certainly offer their services far more cheaply than their British counterparts. Polish and Romanian lorry drivers have certainly undercut British wages, but this is only one factor in the current shortage. My initial point was merely to tease the supporters of this channel who for the most part seem to have lost sight of the fact that socialist policies and working class interests really ought to coincide.

@Yeknodathon Insane over-regulation due to covid hysteria a factor in causing lorry drivers to pack it in?

@Main Switch As far as driving is concerned the drivers I know who gain work via agencies say that wages have been reduced - or at least failed to keep pace with inflation - following an influx of first Polish then Rumanian drivers. This is apparently very much the case when transporting goods to big-name supermarkets. Other factors certainly have influenced the current driver shortage but will not apply so much to shortages of skilled tradesmen (should they indeed occur). Once again my point is that a true socialist should really be looking at the situation from the point of view of working class wage earners, not from that of the middle-class consumer of their services.

@peterebel7899 They're not.

@Main Switch We seem to be approaching general agreement, which is always nice. The dangerous nature of lorry-driving makes restrictive legislation necessary, but some of it has been ill thought through, I believe. Drivers have many burdens to bear, over and above those they are hauling behind their cabs.

@Main Switch I've seen several, making similar points I think. YouTuber The Revered Simon Sideways (a trucker not a clergyman!) hits various nails on the head in a recent video.

@Main Switch The Rev Sideways is, of course, as right wing as can be- which sort of goes to show that you don't have to be a Labour supporter to understand the interests of working people. His putting the fact of foreign workplace competition in context also shows that you can have reservations about immigration without being some sort of fascist. I just wish socialists would get back to the job of stopping Tories grinding the faces of the poor rather than being side-tracked by wokeism and other intellectual dead ends. We all want to gain as great a reward as possible from our daily endeavours and there's nothing wrong with that. Labour is now the party which represents the interests of university educated teachers and state-employed bureaucrats. Technical training and the apprenticeship system has been grossly neglected by successive governments and has found little defence from where defence should have come - the Labour movement. A shortage of British-born skilled tradesmen is the direct result.

@Main Switch Once again I agree. Thank you for a civil exchange of views.

@peterebel7899 They don't.
