A Different Bias

There has never been a cogent case for children wearing facemasks anyway. The statistics simply don't support it. And as a recent court case has shown it has never been legally enforceable.

@simoneclarke7746 Children under16 invariably suffer from a milder form of the disease and it is this which they pass on. Basically this is because their immune systems can deal with infection as soon as it gets into the nose and throat and prevent it reaching the lungs. For a start masks only protect against aerosol droplets which are larger than the weave of a mask and none at all against virions, which are individual viruses. Even then their effectiveness is limited because of the large amount of aerosol which escapes around the edges of masks. An interesting fact is that schoolteachers have suffered proportionately less deaths per capita than any other occupation with a sufficient workforce to be able to apply statistics. This is especially true of primary school teachers. In short there is no evidence whatsoever to suggest that pre-pubescent children pass the disease to each other in a virulent form, or even on to adults. There is even some evidence (albeit very tentative) that exposure to young children with covid 19 can actually create immunity.

@Yeknodathon No-one has ever suggested injecting bleach (not even President Trump!). Ultra-violet light does indeed destroy viruses, as evidenced by the fact that they mostly disappear in the summer months. Unfortunately it has proved impossible to reproduce this effect by artificial means without the risk of creating over-reaction in the form of cancers. Hydroxychloroquine, while of little use once the disease has taken a hold, has undoubted benefits as a prophylactic, as evidenced by numerous peer-reviewed studies and strongly indicated by the remarkably low covid death rate in countries where it is widely employed as an anti-malarial drug.

@Yeknodathon No. Real science. Not bodged-up science peddled by politicians to keep mugs like you under their thumb.

@hannahdyson7129 Children are effective destroyers of the covid virus. The efficiency of the immune response in their noses is sufficient to ensure that any virus that gets in there has no chance to reproduce in anything like the large numbers which occur in adults. Any child which ends up with covid in any virulent, long-lasting form can only do so due to the existence of some life-threatening condition which has weakened their immune system.

@Yeknodathon Comparisons may certainly be drawn. In terms of death rates covid is about three times worse that the worse flu, but given the ages of the majority of victims the number of years of life lost puts it more or less at the bottom of the list of respiratory infections which have affected this country.

@Yeknodathon Which falsehoods? The falsehoods perpetrated by the government and their advisors have done incalculable harm to this country. And I don't suppose anyone takes much notice of me anyway - or indeed, sadly of those epidemiologists and other experts who share my concerns.

@Yeknodathon But all my opinions have a scientific basis. They are not knee-jerk guesswork like so many of the policies you have presumably been slavishly following.

@Yeknodathon Is this some sort of code?

@simoneclarke7746 And due to their generally low viral load children infecting other children and adults is comparatively rare. https://adc.bmj.com/content/106/5/429

@simoneclarke7746 If you look at the BMJ article I sent you you will see that children only very rarely spread the disease, either to other children or to adults. Forcing any child under 16 or so to wear a facemask is an utterly gross and pointless thing to do.

@simoneclarke7746 I realise the DMJ paper is rather long and technical, so here is a relevant extract: "However, more recent studies report that children are less likely to get infected after contact with a SARS-CoV-2-positive individual. It has been suggested that children and adolescents have similar viral loads and may therefore be as likely to transmit SARS-CoV-2 as adults. In addition, the viral load may be similar in asymptomatic and symptomatic individuals. However, reassuringly, transmission in schools from children either to other children or to adults has been rare." There have actually been some tentative studies that indicate exposure to young children with covid can actually build up immunity in adults. It also seems that reaction to rhinoviruses can also wipe out the coronavirus pretty quickly. In other words, if you've got a headcold you can't catch covid! Still early days on that one though.
