  1. The virus is present in such huge numbers that it is a statistical certainty that all viable variants must exist. This means that there are variants in existence ready to take advantage of every opportunity offered to them. Such as lockdowns and border controls which, unless imposed before the virus has taken hold, only extend the problem. I think this may be being realised at last - and not before time either.
