@jiversteve I have explained my position. The alternative to a swift victory for Putin is a long and bloody civil war and a continuing threat to world stability. This Putin Bad, Ukraine good scenario is absurd. It is purely the result of US propaganda. You simply seem incapable of seeing this conflict other than in terms if some sort of football match between Good and Evil. It is simply not so.

@jiversteve Do try to steer clear of these absurd and simplistic historical analogies. They are invariably misleading. For thirty years Ukraine has been at the front line of a struggle for power between Russia and the US. The oligarch gangsters who rule the country fix elections according to which of these entities bribe them the most. The Russian invasion has come about simply because Putin has recognised American weakness as embodied in the person of Joe Biden and illustrated by the disaster of the Afghanistan withdrawal. As commendable as Ukrainian resistance is it can only result in tragedy. This is entirely different to the situation in Britain at the time of World War II when our nation was indeed fighting against invasion by a tyrannical power. If Putin gains control he will merely install another pro-Russian government. The Ukrainians, or at least the growing Westward-looking urban middle class, will resent this but their resentment is small price to pay for averting the possibility of World War III.

@jiversteve I'm not happy to see any civilians killed. That's rather the point. An ideal solution would be a quick victory for Ukraine and for Russia to disappear into a parallel universe. Since that's unlikely to happen the next best thing is for a swift Russian victory and Ukraine trying to become Westernised by gradual and peaceful means which don't involve selling itself to America.

Andrey Melnichenko seems an improbable target for sanctions. He is hardly an oligarch, having gained his wealth through currency speculation and judicious speculation long after the vultures divvied up Russian state industries. He is also a keen supporter of the EU and is thought to be one of the main proponents of strategies designed to make Russian membership possible.

@jiversteve What lies? What support? Andrey Melnichenko is exactly as I described him and my "support" for the invasion merely consists of trying to explain to people the reasons why Putin has acted how he has, and why in the interests of world peace and an end to bloodshed a swift victory for Russia will be the best outcome. I'm not on Russia's side. I'm on the side of peace.

ger du What a very good thing it is that world leaders do not get their views from reading comic books, as you apparently do..

@jiversteve Suddenly everyone's a Zelensky!

@jiversteve How on earth do you work that one out?

@jiversteve A recent poll in Russia showed that 23% of the population opposed the war, while 58% supported it. As with all polls this is certainly skewed, but as large as it is I doubt Siberia could support the transfer of 23% of the Russian population.
