@peterthompson1462 The situation on the island of Ireland is weird. Northern Ireland, with less restrictions is doing much worse than the Republic - all except in the three Ulster counties which have similar infection and death rates to NI!

UK deaths are currently between 16% and 18% above the five year average - and less than half can be attributed to covid. The rest are in all probability due to lack of treatment for serious conditions as a result of hysterical over-reaction to the disease - which continues to kill mainly the very elderly, vaccinated or not. Nonetheless the vaccination programme, combined with increasing immunity gained through infection, is creating an ever-widening gap between the number of cases and the number of fatalities. Should Johnson choose to call an election almost any combination of likely statistical outcomes could be manipulated to his advantage. He will be able to say: "We have learned from our mistakes, now let us get on with the job of putting Britain back on its feet again." And people will believe him.

The sad truth is that many elderly people have such worn-out immune systems that nothing can save them from a novel virus such as this.

@cg3560 Which we are not prioritising. It was always possible to isolate many of the vulnerable. Now that so many people have levels of immunity it would be even easier.

@cg3560 With large numbers of people now immune through infection (and temporarily and to a lesser degree via vaccination) isolation is not necessary. Instead of passes for nightclubs there should be passes for entering the same room as an elderly or otherwise vulnerable person!

Has it crossed your mind that views such as yours make Conservatism seem a far healthier alternative?

In the UK it's around 85% of adults over 16. There are still doubts in some quarters about the advisability of vaccinating pre-pubescent children. The number of a adults with antibodies is estimated at over 91%.

@steveosborne2297 The fact is that we just don't know the effects of the drugs on growing bodies, and since children don't get ill or die the only reason for vaccination is to reduce potential spread to vulnerable adults - which seems a relatively rare event. On balance there are indications against requiring pre-pubescent children to be vaccinated.
1
@steveosborne2297 Vaccines are drugs by any definition - a prophylactic drug, but a drug nonetheless. Semantic quibbling aside, the fact that the age range for hospital admissions is lowering has nothing to do with the number of pre-pubescent children thus affected. Can you point me to a source for your last assertion? And what proportion are pre-pubescent? If there is an increase I cannot see how it could be very large since the initial number involved is so small.

@steveosborne2297 PS: From the ONS report as of today: "Hospital admission rates increased in groups aged 25 to 54 years and groups over 75 years but decreased or remained similar in all other age groups (week ending 3 October). Rates remained the lowest in those aged between 5 to 14 years and highest in groups aged 75 years and over."

@steveosborne2297 From the US Food and Drug Administration official definition: "It is important to note that a vaccine is a drug. Like any drug, vaccines have benefits and risks, and even when highly effective, no vaccine is 100 percent effective in preventing disease or 100 percent safe in all individuals. "

Over 90% of the adult population is now thought to possess antibodies to covid. This ought to mean that herd immunity is very near.

If he does call an election it will just be to prove to the increasing number of Tories who have had enough of him that he still has pulling power.

@ingridschmid1709 Conservatives do loyalty in a way that seems utterly alien to Labour, I'm afraid. Keeping up appearances behind the net curtains of hypocrisy! As with Thatcher, the end would come quickly and unpredictably. Many Tories regard Johnson as irredeemably left wing and useful only as a rabble rouser.
