The idea that a nationwide majority opinion will miraculously result is the best decisions is just plain bonkers. Democracy only works when constrained - and it doesn't matter a great deal what those constraints are. The present system is just about as good as any.

@emm_arr It's delivered the present government - which is on track to becoming one of the most disastrous in modern history. The good thing though is that the system will allow the opposition time to regroup, so when the Labour collapse inevitably occurs there might even be a viable right-wing, populist and patriotic government ready to take its place.
