The idea that an economy must be forever "growing" is at the root of the dilemma. I do not understand why this must be so. In Britain we have a situation where we have an increasingly large aged population who earn little, and a younger wealth-producing population which is reproducing at a fraction of the rate of preceding generations. Contrary to accepted doctrine this is, in my view, an entirely sustainable scenario. We ought to be able to achieve kind of stasis in which young earners maintain a stable population which produces sufficient surplus to provide sustenance to the proportion of that stable population which retires and which ought, quite quickly, to reach very much the same proportion of the population as a whole as a permanent feature of society. Encouraging immigration in order to provide a taxable population is madness. So is federalisation with other countries which have entirely different productivity/ benefit ratios.
