Early being the key word. All that happens now is that new variants more fitted to exploit lockdown conditions come into prominence. Which is exactly what has happened.

The number of cases and even the number of deaths are not what is important here. It is the number of people who become seriously ill enough to be hospitalised. Despite all the hype the death rate in 2020 was not especially remarkable and most of those who died would have died anyway, being very elderly or very frail. It is those who suffer the enormous distress this illness causes - some of whom will carry the scars forever - upon whom efforts should be directed. Lockdowns and magic masks are not the answer. Creating a fully efficient intensive care structure is what is needed. There has been plenty of time for this to happen but instead the government has wasted billions on lockdown support.
