  1. It depend how you define herd immunity, surely? It doesn't mean that the disease will be wiped out, merely that sufficient people will be immune to ensures viruses will find their pathways to new hosts difficult to find and that therefore the number of people infected will be manageable.

  2. The vaccines only recognise a tiny amount of the viral genome -about 1%. Recovery from an actual infection should provide far greater immunity via memory cells.
