@_FsEk The science is confused and contradictory, however. A lengthy study published by the Lancet at the start of the pandemic concluded that lockdowns were fairly useless, and a recent peer-reviewed study from Stanford University has come to much the same conclusion. No study has yet proved their efficacy.

The figures need putting into context. There is only a statistically significant increase in deaths from all causes in England. In Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland figures are normal, and even the rise in England is relatively small. One can only guess at the explanations for these apparent anomalies, but it has to be likely that a great number of these casualties, especially among the very elderly, would have happened anyway.
