There is now a major shift in the balance of power in the world, triggered more than anything by America's dismal performance in Afghanistan. America is no longer respected and feared as once it was and this is leading to many countries reconsidering their positions. It was certainly a factor in Putin's decision to invade Ukraine.

@saint_matthias Doubtful. Western hegemony is really American hegemony and there are very many signs that the American empire is crumbling.

Especially since the dollar seems set for a major collapse. A replacement reserve currency could well be needed - but what will it be?

America can't go on printing money at the rate they are - and anyway the strength of a currency depends very much upon a perception of the economic, political and military strength of the country concerned.

@saltysoldier2289 They both have considerable vaulted reserves - and Russia has positively vast quantities of recoverable gold, as well as platinum. If these sanctions do create a worldwide economic recession as some predict, and the dollar is weakened, Russia might paradoxically benefit from the measures designed to weaken it.

We must wait and see. The case against America is closed. Putin's "adventure" may well not turn out to be the disaster we are being told it is. After all, the people who are saying it are the same people who were convinced it would take the Taliban weeks to reach Kabul.
