The simple fact of the matter is that there has been a violent civil war going on in Ukraine for almost a decade in which thousands have died and many made homeless. This invasion is just the latest phase of that war and is designed, as much as anything, to bring it to an end.

@johnpeterdean1653 The population of the Donbass region is predominantly Russian and many wish to become independent from Ukraine. That's what makes it a civil war. Hitherto help from Russia has been fairly muted but the current invasion is designed to settle the matter once and for all.

@charles3dart683 It's a mute point. He may well wish to go on, but I tend to doubt it. Many Russians, and indeed quite a few "Ukrainians", still regard it as being part of Russia.

@scrapmetal4429 The majority of inhabitants in the Donbass region are of Russian descent and heritage. They have their own breakaway armies, and demand independence. Around 2,000 people have been killed so far and the area is devastated. Google Donbass. Also Google Azov Battalion.
