It is important to remember that the vaccines may not be fully effective and can wear off quickly. Other measures must not be ignored as you may well be asymptomatically infected and thereby unknowingly infecting others.

Trump supports the use of vaccines and does not drink.

Take comfort. First signs are that while highly transmissible the symptoms are very mild indeed.

These figures cannot be true. In the UK over 65% of patients in intensive care are vaccinated as are over 85% of those who die. The figures are even higher in some European countries. It stands to reason that the more people who are vaccinated the higher proportion of them will be represented in hospitals. Vaccines are very useful, but they are not foolproof and they wear off quickly.

Omicron could well be good news and the more people who get it the better if, as it appears at first sight, to be very mild in its effects. Immunity without vaccination at the costs of a few sniffles. The drug companies won't like it of course but that really is just too bad.

@DicksonMaimouth Pfizer pays big bucks. Stupidity is free.

Take comfort. Early signs are that the Omicron variant , while many times more contagious than Delta, is actually far less severe in its effects. It seems that none of the patients so far identified have even had to be hospitalised. If true this is really great news because it means people can become immune at the cost of just a runny nose.

@docostler I agree. Optimism can be dangerous, but things have been so tiresome lately I've decided to indulge. Yes omicron has around 37 mutations in its spike protein but the vaccine manufacturers say they can adapt their stuff to suit - which would be a pity really if omicron does turn out to provide a glimpse of freedom. As far as the immunity it provides is concerned it seems thusfar that a general rule more or less total immunity is gained to the variant contracted, but you can catch another variant, although the symptoms will be mild.

Vaccinated people get sick too.

No. You need somewhat less than that percentage to be IMMUNE for herd immunity to be achieved. Immunity through infection is now clearly shown to be more robust and long-lasting than the somewhat ineffective and short-lived vaccines so a combination of both approaches is the best route to take.

@CharlesSmith-io9fp It is widely available on the Internet. A number of studies have shown that immunity through infection is more robust and long-lasting than that provided by vaccination - although it is emphasised that people should take vaccinations if they wish to. A study recently in Israel suggests that natural immunity provides 27times more protection than vaccines.
1
@CharlesSmith-io9fp From the Times of Israel: Natural immunity from contracting coronavirus provided Israelis with longer-lasting protection against the Delta variant than two shots of the Pfizer vaccine given early this year, new Israeli research suggests. The study by Maccabi Healthcare Service looked at individuals who had either gotten two shots of the vaccine by the end of February or tested positive for COVID-19 by that time. It compared 46,035 Maccabi members who caught the coronavirus at some point during the pandemic and the same number of double-vaccinated people.

@CharlesSmith-io9fp Alas, you are at the mercy of the CDC which works hand in glove with the pharmaceutical industry to push vaccines at the cost of destroying information on alternative solutions. I will bombard you with various sources in other posts but none of it may get through the censorship you Americans unknowingly labour under.

@CharlesSmith-io9fp From the British Medical Journal Sep 3, 2021 Gazit and colleagues in Israel compared 16,215 never-infected individuals who had two doses of the Pfizer vaccine with 16,215 unvaccinated individuals known to have had a Covid-19 infection. There were 191 symptomatic breakthrough infections with the Delta variant in the vaccinated-uninfected group and only 8 such infections in the infected-unvaccinated group. The adjusted risk of symptomatic breakthrough infections for the vaccinated group was 27.02 (P<0.001), which translates into 96.3% relative effectiveness of natural infection compared with vaccination.
1
@CharlesSmith-io9fp But I've sent you extracts from The Times of Israel and The British Medical Journal. What more do you want? Infection creates immunity in very many diseases. Why should you doubt it happens with covid?
1
@CharlesSmith-io9fp I don't see the relevance of this. Please explain.

Your story isn't much of an advertisement for masks and vaccines though, is it?

@noncalamari Unlike Kevin (apparently) I believe the vaccines have an important role to play. But they are inefficient and short-lived and not to be heavily relied upon. In the UK more than 65% of patients in intensive care and more than 85% of those who fie are fully vaccinated. There are similar figures in other European countries. The figures for the US are not readily available as far as I can see. Which is worrying.

Not much evidence of that in this comments section.
