Or when they know that despite all the rhetoric they're actually in deep doodah.

@kirkwhite8600 The retreat is probably tactical. Anyway, even if the Ukrainians do take Kherson they're a long way from taking Donbass, which is far more heavily defended as well as having two armies of battle-hardened separatist veterans. The only quick answer is for the Ukrainians to get to the negotiating table.

And if he refuses?

He has discovered that helping Ukraine will only prolong the agony.

@Rocket_scientist_88 Well you do seem to have swallowed the official line -hook and sinker as well! The fact is no-one apart from the very high-ups on both sides know what the actual position on losses or available armaments is. I'm sure you're aware the Russian version is very different, and it is pointless to argue which is the more likely. Until an agreement is reached the war will continue, with loss of life and considerable effects on the world economy. You are living in a fools' paradise to believe either that Russia can be beaten quickly or that it will necessarily be the loser in the economic war between the two blocs. Russia can starve Europe and America of both gas and oil, as well as affecting food supplies. Hopefully it will be at this point that people will start to ask what all this suffering is about - and why their governments have chosen to take sides in what is basically a turf war between two sets of gangsters.

Russia has always been willing to negotiate. It was Ukraine's failure to do so or keep earlier promises which led to the invasion.

@TartarSauceIsNotDead They weren't their nukes, they were Russian nukes positioned there. And Ukraine has only existed as an independent nation since 1991. It was a Russian or Soviet province before then. It was clear that Budapest agreements weren't working from the start and the later treaties signed in Minsk were designed to redress the balance - but Ukraine has ignored them
