He never said it.

@crystalwebster2005 That's just what some of them said to encourage the troops. Nobody in the right mind believed it.

@nuclearblackhole Assuming of course you can avoid nuclear Armageddon and total moral and economic collapse.

@nuclearblackhole Too old!

@xvi1128 ?? Too clever for me!

@QuercusQuest I really don't think so. It would have been an unexpected bonus but the Russian's real aim has been to draw Ukraine into battle in order not to gain territory, but to destroy as much of its army as possible.
2
@QuercusQuest Russia does. And the real invasion is now due. It's aim is not to conquer Ukraine but to secure Crimea and Donbass - which is all Russia has ever wanted to do. The Russians are not as well-organised and trained as the Ukrainians, but they are as stubborn as hell and prepared to take quite incredible losses.

It is now clear that phase one of the war was just a softening-up operation. Russia cannot lose. If by some miracle Ukraine is re-armed enough to push back the new onslaught Putin will nuke Kiev. What will the West do then?

@nuclearblackhole True enough! I was fool enough to believe it at the time!

@alanbellas513 I think you're wrong. The problem for Russia was that NATO had created a large Ukrainian army post 2014 and the Russians suspected, probably rightly, that it was to be used to try to retake Crimea and Donbass. The SMO can therefore be seen as a pre-emptive measure designed to destroy this army on Ukrainian soil, rather than meet it by defending the disputed areas directly. The Russians have kept all the territory acquired in 2014 and are now extending it to include all of Donbass. The Ukrainian army is substantially depleted also - so Russia is winning at this point and only a very substantial further input from NATO can alter that situation in any way.

@michaelmorningstar8645 The government didn't. Some military commanders did to encourage their troops. See how easy that was?

@BigDickMcdick This seems an utter comic-book fantasy.

@michaelmorningstar8645 No. Should I be? You are wrong and I am right.

@michaelmorningstar8645 Okay then. Direct me to anywhere where Putin or any senior Russian government official has set a time limit on the success of the invasion. I'd be grateful if you could.
