@ronpool3114 A third of Ukrainians speak Russian as a first language anyway - including Zelensky.

@kateryna5284 I am somewhat stuck in my ways. Is it Moscow or Moskva? Paris or Paree?
2
@ronpool3114 But Russian-speaking people living in Ukraine are forced to speak Ukrainian -which is one of the things they get aggrieved about.

@ohdearearthlings1879 I suppose being pro-Nazi was what helped Stalin fight a war with Nazi Germany which cost millions of Russian lives. And what "exterminating" has Putin been up to?
1
@kateryna5284 So its time to commit the same sins in reverse is it? Not a good plan.
1
@ronpool3114 No. The Russians in Crimea are in the majority and nearly that in Donbass. They have been there for several generations. They look upon the Kiev government as a foreign power - much as Mexicans might if the US was to suddenly take their country over.
1
@JamesC785 But why? That's bad enough, surely?
1
@kateryna5284 Of course Stalin was as bad as Hitler - worse in many respects- and of course most of the Russians in Donbass are the descendants of those who were shipped in by Stalin to replace the original Tatar population. Is it right though that they should be forced to become part of a regime and culture they feel treats them badly? Tell me honestly: what proportion of the population of Donbass do you believe wants independence, and a closer relationship with Russia than with Ukraine?

@kateryna5284 I accept that the language issue is only one relatively small part of the problem, but a symbolic one, surely? The "Ukrainisation" of the Russian population of Donbass has has some disastrous effects, but perhaps not as much as the economic consequences of the creation of the country in 1991? Is it true that wages in the coal and steel industry dropped by 80% and there is a general feeling that Donbass was being bled dry in order to finance the Westernisation of the country as a whole? In short, do the separatists have a case, in your opinion?
1
@kateryna5284 Thank you very much for your insights. I perceive that Donbass is deeply divided, and that Russia has certainly taken advantage of this. On the other hand, a series of weak and corrupt Ukrainian governments has allowed the situation to escalate and Zelensky's blunders have allowed it to get entirely out of hand. My best wishes to you and your family anyway. May peace come to your homeland soon.

@JamesC785 The language war is unfortunate, but is understandable from both sides - and points pretty firmly to the fact that these areas are NOT parts of Ukraine in anything like the fullest sense. The Ukraine created in 1991 is pretty much a made-up country and the present dreadful situation is an illustration of how countries are not formed by people sitting around a table and drawing lines on a map. Compromises should have be made, but were not. The most equitable and pragmatic solution is -like it or not - for Crimea to be recognised as part of the Russian Federation and for Donetsk and Luhansk to be recognised as independent republics.

@ohdearearthlings1879 I wouldn't disagree. But Putin is not a socialist.
1
@ohdearearthlings1879 True enough, but this has no relevance to what's happening in Russia and Ukraine. They are both kleptocracies, run by crooks.
