I live in Abbey Wood at the Eastern end of Crossrail. They have knocked down the horrid estates on the main drag and are rebuilding to cover up the rest just behind it that they are not rebuilding. I live in one of those estates and all they have done to my bit is put in some trees, new paving, benches and some kids playgrounds. Sad really that they just put up a facade to hide the mess behind it. They should have ripped down the whole lot and rebuilt as it is the part of Thamesmead that really does need a new lease of life. If anybody knew the old Ferrier Estate in Kidbrooke then it is like that and that was ripped down years ago.

The problem with the riff raff is that a fair few end up on housing benefit which is a double whammy for councils. How is it productive to build a load of new social housing which costs lets say 70-100k per unit only to have to pay the full rent for the lifetime of that tenant if they are too ill to work, or are too lazy to find a job? The only way things would change is if a war flattened the worlds cities and it all started again like after the second world war. Maybe that is in the pipeline for a future date. We all know that a reset gives economies the shock they need to revive themselves, and what better than a bit of depopulation and demolition the good old explosive way.
