I was looking at old photos from where I grew up and really old photos the buildings were grubby and then you had the nice buildings added from the 1890’s and then after the war you see them buildings steadily being pulled down. The only problem is building big stores in that old style costs so much money whereas it is cheap to put a bit of metal and/or concrete together. Shame but that is progress.
