I used to see and talk to Sue Batten the first female fire officer in Britain. My Uncle, Grandmother and Aunt used to work in Lewisham (Fireman and Cooks) and I used to go to my Grans shift on a Saturday at the station. Funny thing was there was/is a small Elevator at one end and we got stuck in it. The fire crew rang the bells and rescued us 😂 A little embarrassing for my Gran to say the least but she was a good sport and even got into the local paper because of it. Once I walked into the lounge area and a few firemen were watching a naughty video, obviously not the same watch which Sue was on. They had it good back then with a full sized snooker table, being able to sleep on their night shift with dormitory rooms and having a second job in the day when they was on their night shifts. Too right I say because why not have perks when you qualify for a job like that? Now I suppose it is all different and not such a good job like back then.
