I’ve been reading an older book, called “The Axemaker’s gift”, by two authors, Burke and Ornstein. It suggests that the increase in our intellectual capacity to reason and create, began with making stone tools, such as hand axes. The steps from early hominids to our species, are explained, I am finding it a fascinating read. Very much enjoy your videos, Stefan, this one really resonated since I’ve been reading this book! It also suggests language originated, as the tool makers would need to show and explain to apprentices, how to make them.

I love how all the “fat cat” elected and unelected officials, want to make cuts to benefits for people on the low end of the spectrum. Those same officials, never have to miss a meal, decide whether their meds can be afforded or whether they take the money from the food they buy, etc. a tight time with rent, food, meds, clothing for kids, etc. no, the officials who blandly talk about making cuts to those programs, won’t ever have to make those deductions. It’s all numbers on paper, to them. 🤨

So, you’re ok with us continuing to burn fossil fuels, and be just ok with it all? I live in N.S. We’ve had more heat and humidity than is usual for here, the last few summers are warmer and more humid than past ones. We used to have moderate summers, due to ocean. The ocean is warming too, and we are getting different species here than formerly, great white sharks are getting sighted more often. We have experienced a severe dry period in the spring, which led to unprecedented wildfires, and we’ve just come off a a few weeks with heavy rain incidents causing flooding, again unprecedented. I just feel we cannot take a chance and do “business as usual”. And this summer has been very hot, and has caused problems for people across the planet, and food production, etc. We can’t be glib about this. It is a serious issue.

Thank you, “tak”, Rob! I have always been fascinated by the roots of language and have some books on the subject. Also had a friend who was a retired linguistics professor, we had great discussions on it all. He spoke several Languages, like you, I only speak French and studied Latin in high school (Canada). Was always intrigued by the parallels in those two languages, and later with others. I recall one book I read suggested words like “water” could have a long ago common ancestor, even the Hittite word for water is similar, like “watar “ or something. Amazing. And aqua in Latin, eau in French, and other languages such as an African one, okka. So interesting! I often thought I should have been a linguist! Love your videos, always interesting.

51st state? If you can see what’s happening in the US right now, you have to know it wouldn’t be good for us. Wealth and power seeking people would come and disregarding any environmental or other concerns, would rape our land for the minerals they need for electronic things, and the oil and gas. Water. It would all be here for the taking, and to hell with us, the citizens. We’d have no say! So, starry eyed, and perhaps even weed addled folks who think it’d be ok, you aren’t thinking straight. Or perhaps, at all. BAD IDEA. I’m a proud Canadian who values our country, its values, ethos, etc. Period.

He said we needed to do things to make the border safer…we’ve done a serious effort to do that, but he will not stop imposing the tariffs. And then he said, that it’s “about the revenue” the tariffs will bring for the federal government. So, not about the border after all. And CANADA isn’t the problem, with fentanyl, etc., coming INTO US from here. But, our border people got several KILOS of cocaine (I think) coming in here, from US just a day or so ago. We have guns and drugs coming IN, so a big problem for us, as well. It is a sad day when two friends, as we’ve been, allies, go to war for specious reasons. Trump is blowing up an alliance that has been good for so long. And for what? So he can be a big shot, the King Pin. Argh.🇨🇦

I am Canadian, and not an apologist for Trudeau, but…..you are critiquing the police supporting a demonstration about climate change, in the USA, and saying that people who complained they couldn’t go on to work….but you don’t see the flip side of the truckers protests in Ottawa during the winter. The citizens of the downtown were completely shut down. Stores and restaurants were closed, and truckers blew horns at all hours. Residents couldn’t sleep, and feared going out bc of the aggressiveness of the protesters. They had no respect for the residents of the downtown, nor the businesses that lost money. This would have gone on, streets closed, noise, etc. there were barbecues, parties, things for the kiddies. A circus. To be fair, I feel the government felt they had no choice. There was an element that were there to cause trouble, not merely to protest the Covid restrictions.

I think it’s moonshine, that H and M were “pushed out by the Royal family”. They decided (or rather, Meghan did) that being working Royals wasn’t what they wanted. They wanted to live “a private life”, because for Meghan, being a Royal wasn’t about a glamorous life, but work, rather tedious at times. Not what Meghan envisioned as a glamorous Royal! I think she thought she’d be like Diana, seen in magazines and journals, dressed in latest fashions, wearing gorgeous jewellery, and smiling at the camera. She did a great deal more than that, of course! Anyway, good riddance to them.

@RobertMadden Well, mostly your “French ancestors” came from the Maritimes, on the east coast of Canada. Known as Acadians. They were driven out for refusing to swear allegiance to the British, who had taken over what was then Nova Scotia, today is divided into New Brunswick and Nova Scotia…..I live in the latter. The British then took the land and animals, burned the farms. Those who were put on ships willynilly, families divided, ended up in Louisiana, parts of the Caribbean, and some even back to France. It’s called “Le Grand Derangement” here, and is a blot on our history. There are still Acadians here, very proud of their history, and still speaking French, as well as English.

It’s funny, but as I note that people are driving HUGE trucks, so called “pick up trucks”, which are enormous and have massive tires, which means greater fuel usage, I marvel at how oblivious people are, to the consequences of these actions. And cars are bigger now than 15 years ago, too. I note people here in Canada, anyway, sitting in parking lots with their engines running while they check their phones. For maybe 15 min. Spewing CO2 all that time, and going nowhere. Completely oblivious to the effect. They think “it’s just them”, but I see it every time I go to a store and am in a parking lot! Argh.

What is Vance’s deal? Lots of very productive, forward looking people don’t have kids. And…..we don’t need a lot more people on the planet!
And his idea that “women only exist to bear children”, denies that women, like men, have desires to fulfill some dream, use talent they have, and want to go out into the workplace. Not every woman is suited to mopping up baby’s sick, changing diapers, and endlessly washing clothes, cooking meals, etc. (I was a stay at home mom, loved it, but knew lots of moms who badly wanted to get back to work, after having a child!).

I still think when you put Trump up against Kamala, he had much less in the sense of a cogent plan for the economy, and he constantly offered plans to destroy his enemies, hinting at a autocracy, whereas Kamala had good clear ideas about what she wanted to do to help middle America. She wasn’t negative. She persisted in saying she’d be the president for everyone. But…she is a woman. I truly think that her being a “woman” made her less attractive, serious, in some voters’ eyes. I heard men and even women say when interviewed, they’d vote for Trump, because of the economy, he was a business man. Did they not see he was a failed businessman, dishonest, crooked to the core. But somehow, the fact his opponent was female, and a woman of colour, to boot, made them decide to go with “Daddy Warbucks”. Despite his pitiful track record in both business, and as a human being. It made no difference. You can go on about not starting wars, etc., but most people wanted a white man. The US is still stuck in that thinking. Sad.

You’ve touched on a few of my “bugbears”, I hear people on the radio, our CBC here in Canada, which should know better, saying criteria when they mean criterion. I also, bc I studied science and Latin, used to get upset about data being used as a singular. I would think, as a collective word it should have a plural verb. Like, “the people are “, not the “people is”, or “many are”, not “many is”. Same for phenomena, often used as a singular. There are other things which I find grating, but heaven knows, I’m not perfect! As to data, I realize the ship has sailed on that. It is now the data is, the data has, but I still am not comfortable with that!

Ok, how could Trump win, after Harris had raised so much cash when she became the candidate. And had such huge crowds at her rallies. Howcum did that not translate to votes? Is America so fixed on the dollar, that they’d vote in a guy who is a slime ball. And Biden did a good job turned the Covid economy into a much better situation. No one was to blame for the Covid situation and it changed so much, including the economy. Not Trump OR Biden’s fault. But Biden did a good job of
reversing the negative effects.
But it’s funny, the Trump gang are for more in the tent with the rich, entitled, greedy elites. Harris was appealing to the working class, unions, and those folks should have stood with her. Are we being blinded by these rich people who control of a good deal? Because a lot of us don’t get the reality. And you’ve said that just now. The reason people feel that the system is rigged, is bc it is, but it isn’t the left leaning politicians, it’s the right wingers who are protecting the rich and keeping the status quo. The rich keep getting richer! And middle America is fed up.
