Problem is it is no where near as rare and has too many applications outside of being a store of value to maintain it's rarity and price. The problem with finding a replacement for the g standard is it has to be fungible (ok silver yes), AND rare (silver significantly less rare) AND retain a consistently low supply that will not be corrupted by someone inventing a new machine or tool that becomes ubiquitous and ties the supply of that resource to the continued success of businesses. Because then your commodity price is fighting against multi-national corporations and their efforts to retain low expenses. I think at best you just want something non-fungible (gems) or particularly rare mineral that has remained rare.
