  1. That red area is more prone to cold fronts than central mexico, zacatecas and durango can get below 0 F plus summers are very hot despite being high elevation.

  2. Aside from Puebla, Jalisco, Edomex, Morelos and Cdmx most places in mexico are like that. Even Nuevo León with a large city like Monterrey still quite scattered in population. Northern Baja and La Laguna are probably the only decent size areas in the north with high population density.
