Other colonies with pathogen immunity like southeast Asians and central Africans werent as affected by it,therefore preserved a lot of their population. What better way to conquer a civilization than basically make them dissappear. Also, a huge part of modern agriculture domestication like corn, tomato, potato, strawberries, chilli, pineapple, turkey plus.... a considerable part of modern math and astronomy came from mesoamerican cultures, potato saved a huge of of western europe of starvation.

@FOLIPE México doesn't have a terrible quality of life, it has higher gdp per capita than China, free-cheap healthcare, strong electronic industry, the problem is that all the violence, corruption and racism creates a lot of inequality and prevents the country to be fully developed. An average American can live as middle-high class, even in the most expensive cities.

@Zerch-gi9qr In south America, highland planes are called paramos, which are cold sabanas. In México we instead got stepes and pine forest at high elevations because of lower rainfall.

@LeviBulger Im aware that it doesn't get snow routinely every winter, but it does get it sometimes, that's why i said "it can snow" For such a hot city it's impressive. We get snow every uear in Chihuahua despite being very hot in summer too.

Corn-maize, a very adaptable plant, that like rice and wheat, forms a base for agriculture and a huge range of food, mayans adored that plant. The southern most tip of south america has a similar latitude of southern canada, but climate is quite different, canada is continental with -30 winters while southern Chile is oceanic like scotland with mild winters, the Antarctic wind spells you mention are the equivalent of the northern polar vortex, which is much more unstable and can send snowfalls to the tropics at times. In general south america is more humid and stable with year around pleaseant temperatures.

Places like Central Asia or the Midwest in North America are so far inland that climate becomes extremely continental with very defined seasons, kinda as if half of the year you are in the artic circle and the other in the tropics. Huge contrast with places at similar latitudes like Europe or the Pacific North West were temperatures are closer to be moderate.

That already happened during the Mesozoic, Antarctica had rainforests and continental climate, the earth already follows a path of overheating and cooling over time, the problem will be that, technically the earth it's supposed to enter a small ice age in the future, but with global warming will be altered, imagine the possible temperature with a natural global warming along with human activity, probably as hot as Triassic where huge landmasses formed vast inland desserts, making cold-blooded animals successful again.
