Once that happens, it changes the calculus. At that point, huge conventional forces aren't as useful. Delivery systems, defense systems, decentralized infrastructure, bunkers and shielded areas, all become more important. It is interesting that in a war with China, where the Chinese have a manpower and material advantage, nuclear weapons might be just what's needed. And if Russia falls apart and their nukes are not available to be used, the nuclear exchange might be fairly one sided.

@costakeith9048 See, I don't know where you're getting this. I'm not arguing with it, but I haven't seen that take anywhere. And that gets to the heart of the problem. If your sources that you trust say something different, then you think this guy is full of shit. And if my sources that I trust tell me something different, then I think you're full of shit. And then you think that I've been propagandized, and I think that you're a Russian troll or bot. Fact is, unless you or I are there, we don't really know what's going on, and every side has an incentive to push their own chosen narrative.

I mean, right now, if it weren't for Russia and China, I wouldn't see much potential for war, unless we get those famines in Africa and the Middle East, that lead to mass population movements of refugees into other areas, leading to conflict. I don't even understand what Russia and China stand to gain, because they don't. The war in Ukraine, and a potential invasion of Taiwan, are solely to boost Putin and Xi. It is terrifying that so much death and destruction hinge on the arrogance of two aging men.

I want to say that, but if we blockade them, they are more vulnerable than Germany and Japan in the World Wars. And I don't think the US is gonna want to land in China until the CCP surrenders. Even India is across the Himilayas. That would be a hard land war to fight. The best opponent for China to threaten with tanks is Russia, and Russia has way more nukes.

@Easy-Eight But that doesn't really negate his main point, which is that the US doesn't want to use nukes, because that is the only real way the US mainland can be hurt.

Ramming fishing boats of other nation, building up reefs into manmade islands to build military bases on, invading Vietnam and being pushed out after the US left, threatening countries who question their narrative, threatening to invade Taiwan, which is a country and not a part of China... There is a reason that all of China's neighbors are allying with the US. Because they are afraid of Chinese Warmongering.

@moritamikamikara3879 Because our current society doesn't need to. We have empty land all over the place that we can colonize. But most people aren't farmers, and farming isn't as labor intensive, so we don't need that extra land. And free trade gets you the benefits of that land without having to genocide people. And people like not having to worry about being genocided themselves. If life was desperate, then humans would do it. But life isn't desperate. The world has risen in quality of life, with more people alive than ever before, and far from reaching malthusian levels, humans are reproducing less so that we won't even reach overpopulated levels. We literally have two people in the world who want war right now, and only to prop up their own failing dictatorships. When Putin and Pooh are gone, then Humanity will reach another peaceful age.

I agree with that. A hypothetical situation would be if Russia falls apart and their nukes are offline, and US is losing a war with China due to the Manpower and Material imbalance, then I think nukes could be seen as useful. Then again, we can just blockade them and they'll feel it worse than the Germans and Japan did in the World Wars. Never fight a land war in Asia, kids.

It's interesting, because all this time, MAAD seemed to indicate that once the ICBMs were launched, that was it, there was nothing for it. But all the hoopla about Hypersonic Glide Vehicles means that someone thinks that the more mundane ICBMs can be intercepted. And if that's true, then doesn't MAAD break down? Maybe that explains the War in Ukraine beyond mere kleptomania. But if that's what Russia is fighting for, it seems to be a lost cause.

What's so scary about that? Once we get into space, nukes will look like children's toys. Hell, biological weapons already do that too. Whether you believe COVID was manmade or not, the idea of something like that being created and unleashed on the world makes nukes look like children's toys. Factories changed warfare to be way more destructive. Train, guns, artillery, bombs, planes, submarines. You fear the wrong things. Our world is filled with things that can kill you. People fear sharks more than bees, yet bees kill more, and mosquitoes even more. Cars are more dangerous in a mass killing event than any gun. But we don't fear the car, because we are familiar with it. Familiarity doesn't take away the danger, but it takes away the fear. Dogs can hunt and kill, but we call them Good boy and have them sleep in our houses.

Yeah, I recall that they see them as a last resort to preserve Russian national integrity. And seeing as no one is threatening Russian National integrity (at most speculating on its own collapse), I think the odds of nuclear war is low. Nuclear threats? All but certain. :D

Students were sold a bad bill of goods. 17 year old Millennials were propagandized to go to college or else be broke. Then they were offered free debt, with no strings attached. Don't need collateral, don't need credit, just need to sign up for classes. Don't even need to pass them. Don't need to have a plan or degree. Put it in any other context and it is madness, or entrapment. And now the economy and world suffer from lowered consumption. Since COVID the government has been postponing repayments, and they are gonna have to eventually bite the bullet that people don't want to pay back those loans, especially since most people didn't really benefit from them. The value of a college degree has flatlined. It is a huge fiasco, and entirely of the government's making. But they will pass it on the to taxpayer. Remember that, before you believe that the government can fix problems by spending money.

I think Russia and China have invested in psyops to demoralize and confuse, so that in the confusion, they can snake some conquests. China with Taiwan, if not a few others, and Russia with Ukraine, if not a few others. I also think there is a marxist anti-west cult that pushes self-destructive behaviors, like LGBT, drugs and casual sex, CRT. It is a artifact of the Cold War, Soviet attempts to demoralize, confuse, and weaken the West. But it has survived in Universities and Hollywood, where these ideas have spread like mold, and infect the products they put out. And third, I think the current elites in the west are trying to hold onto their centralized power, when the zeitgeist and spirit of the times is trending towards more individuality and decentralization. The internet was a big part of giving people a voice, and populism is on the rise. So we are seeing short-sighted and illogical decisions from the elites in order to hold onto power for just a little longer.

Hmm, maybe if Ukrainian troops are marching on Moscow, maybe Putin would pull a Hitler in the bunker, but I don't think at that point that the chain of command would go through with it. One madman may, but as long as humans are alive, there is hope. For Xi, I could see the Chinese arrogance and shame based culture leading to such an outcome, but luckily the Chinese have far less nukes. It is what it is, but I'm not lying awake at night.
