Vote in the primaries for the most progressive candidates you can find. That doesn't mean you owe the party anything in general elections if you don't want. But use the opportunity you have to make them better and pull them to the left.

I don't think they care in all honesty but please do in open primary states. In closed primary states make sure you are registered with them at least long enough to vote in their primaries.

I think they are both pretty open about it.

The key to being able to reform them is by electing Sanders in 2020 (or a similar progressive). The reason they are able to block all reforms right now is because Hillary won the nomination.

I kinda think they do (correction, they don't) although I'm not positive. Not that it matters because if they do like I think I know it doesn't count for anything. That is really fucked up that US citizens get no say in who their president is.

Dorothy regarding, "You are misinformed." No it seems that you are. "Like other territories, Puerto Rico can participate in the presidential primary process. It holds a primary election in the spring of each presidential election year. Then the parties choose delegates to the Republican and Democratic National Convention, who are pledged to vote at that convention for the winners of Puerto Rico's primary, but that's the end of their participation in the presidential election" But that is the end of their participation in the presidential election... IE they don't vote for President. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_voting_rights_in_Puerto_Rico

Regarding, "Your point was to make the people of Puerto Rico seem not to be US Citizens." That was definitely not my point and I don't think that was the original posters point.

No prob Dorothy. I agree the disaster in PR is fucking terrible and there is a good case to be made that they would have been better helped and made the priority they should have been if they could vote for President. Take care.

And I can't speak for McKenzie but I interpreted his statement as an effort to point out PRs not being able to vote as a problem that he was trying to bring awareness to.

lukus regarding, "they have no actual rules to speak of." I understand why you say this but they actually do. Some they can break and some they cannot. If Sanders gets enough pledged delegates in the primary there is nothing the party can do to stop him at that point. Of course they will try and do everything they can to prevent it from getting to that point but I don't think they can succeed. He is rightfully the most popular politician in the country with name recognition. Those were important things he lacked when he started his campaign last time. Even with their dirty tricks I just don't see how they will be able to stop him. Time will tell. And if the party succeeds in getting a corporate stooge like Harris I will find someone else to vote for like the Green candidate in the general.

Regarding, "If what he needs is pledged delegates, and those are chosen by the DNC" According to wiki, "Pledged delegates are elected or chosen at the state or local level, with the understanding that they will support a particular candidate at the convention. Pledged delegates are, however, not actually bound to vote for that candidate, thus the candidates are allowed to periodically review the list of delegates and eliminate any of those they feel would not be supportive." The party has a certain amount of self-interest. They are only going to cheat as much as they think it helps them. Let's say Sanders gets the most pledged delegates and they didn't vote for him. Not only would that be an easy way to insure they lost the general election, but that would be an easy way to implode the party on a national level. The rigging the party and insiders conducted during 2016 was considered to be a net gain at the time. They didn't think they were going to get caught (thank you wikileaks), and they thought their inferior candidate (compared to Sanders in the general) was still going to win. Even BS superdelegates would likely have (but maybe not I concede) switched sides to Sanders had he gotten the most pledged delegates. The biggest problem about them is that they are allowed to influence the campaign from the very start by declaring the allegiance to frame the election for the candidate they prefer.

VoteGreen regarding, "The DNC is DEAD." Maybe they are dead to you but no they are not dead to the world as much as they probably should be. And since they are not going anywhere anytime soon I'm going to continue to do what little I can to make them the party they should be and that includes voting in their primaries. Continue to grow and improve the Green party. Get Green candidates on ballots. I will certainly be voting for many of them. But I can do that and try to reform the "democratic" party at the same time so I will.

Both parties cover their tracks as best they can and thanks to the laws they write they are both able to more than they should. That said if anyone doesn't realize both parties do it it is only because they are not paying attention in my opinion.

Progressives are facing a major roadblock here because Hillary won the nomination. Had Sanders won the nomination all this would be going very differently. But please work to build the Green party. They are my plan B in general elections when the dems do not provide a true progressive on the ticket (which is almost always lately), and if nothing else they are needed to try to pull the dems to the left even if they do eventually change.
