  2. Bullshit. Superdelegates were used to change the narrative of the election. That is why over 400 delegates came out to support Hillary before the election even started. They wanted to make her winning seem inevitable. Even after Sanders was up in pledged delegates early, when the corporate media put the delegate totals up they would use all delegates to leave the impression that she was fucking crushing him.   3. If superdelegates were used only to prevent a contested convention they would be acceptable. To do this they would be required to only vote for the candidate who gets the most pledged delegates. That way they would not be tipping the scale but rather making sure that there isn't a contested convention which can get very messy. Regarding, "Progressives need to band together and REFUSE to vote for a democratic candidate" If you don't want to vote for a democrat in general elections you go ahead. I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise. I happily voted for Jill Stein last general. That said please vote in "democratic" primaries for the most progressive candidates you can find. I understand why you are pissed at the party. You should be. But take that opportunity to try and make them better than they currently are.

  7. They are a way of preventing a contested convention (note-this is not the reason the DNC wants to keep them). To win the nomination you need a majority of delegates (the most is not good enough). Superdelegates are a way of making sure the candidate who has the most support (delegates) has a majority of delegates. I would be fine keeping them as long as they are required to vote for whoever has the most delegates. That way they are supporting the will of the people rather than fucking with it (like they do now). Don't expect the DNC to do anything like this because the only good reason for keeping them is not why they want to keep them.

I can't give you a great answer to that. There are lots and lots of questionable rules in our government and this is just an example of one of them. Just getting rid of superdelegates altogether and making it so that the candidate with the most delegates wins (as opposed to needing a majority) would actually be the best solution to the problem for those of us that want free and fair elections. Sadly the party isn't willing to do that because maintaining their power is more important to them.

  10. To all those people that say there is no reason for superdelegates you are wrong. There is exactly one good reason and that is to prevent a contested convention. To win the nomination you need a majority of delegates and when more than 2 candidates run (which is essentially always) it is very possible that the person getting the most delegates does not get a majority of delegates and that opens the door for chaos and infighting that no party wants. Superdelegates is a way to stop this. All that said superdelegates are a fucking joke because, let's be real, THAT IS NOT WHY THE DNC LOVES THEM. That is not the primary reason they are there. There are there to try to influence voters. They are there to try and tip the scale from the very start. Hillary Clinton had 400 delegates before any of us peasants were allowed to vote because that was their not so subtle way of telling us who was suppose to win. People want to vote for the winner. People want their "votes to matter." And the DNC sent a clear message early that the only way to be on the winning side from the start and have a meaningful vote was going to be by voting for Clinton. Even after Sanders was up in pledged delegates early the corporate media happily put all delegates up together to make it appear as if Hillary Clinton was fucking crushing him. That is why they are there. I could deal with superdelegates sticking around because of, like I pointed out, the only good reason for them to exist. But then superdelegates, should they stay, should need to be required to vote for the candidate who gets the most pledged delegates. Period. The DNC would never agree to such a thing because the reason they are around is not for the only legit reason they should exist.

  50. op regarding, "Ranked Choice Voting" I love ranked choice voting but I'm not sure this is the best place for it. And I'm not saying that there are not other ways to prevent a contested convention. For example they could also change the rules so that the candidate who has the most delegates wins instead of needing a majority of delegates. The point I am making is that there is a legit reason to justify superdelegates. Let's say the party changed the rules to what I propose... Superdelegates stay but they are required to vote for the candidate who has the most pledged delegates. Would you really have a problem with them then? Because I wouldn't and I fucking hate them. And do you agree that it is in the party's interests to avoid a contested convention? Because there definitely is. And as soon as there is a contested convention the results will never be the will of the people at that point and the nomination is likely to be decided by the will of the party elites.
