It was a debt imposition dressed up as multiculturalism, if people want less money in society through less demand, then be prepared for poverty like nothing before. Reduce the deficit and we reduce money, so expect to live differently as all money is debt based, if people have paid off their houses, they aren't adding to the money supply. We are a debt based economy, less debt will mean less money and prices can fall but eventually either public or private debt will have to increase again or total system change and parks become gardens.

@davidkottman3440 Depends on what society thinks is going to happen and how adaption moving forward will happen. The policy of freehold consumption of energy on a finite planet has....issues.

The choice between a sack of gold or a lifejacket as the ship's sinking is pretty clear. .But what then, money was the thing used to get people to do things, if no new debt is entered into and 25% of the population is over 65 so they aren't, without immigration most countries are losing populations. This system of debt, that always needs new debt and is the only way to get production happening, if new debt means more money and the public can't get it ( debt )then govt will have too. The current US style of lowering govt spending while I think lowering taxes, means nothing overall changes in the economy. Lower the deficit and that lowers the amount of money though. "Surrendering to the accumulation of stuff was never going to be a long-term plan." Yes, but we were told if we had money we could have anything we want. How many people were ever going to turn that down..

@jeffwalther2023 I would suggest paul beckwith as a channel to watch, maybe read some James Hansen, his latest shows a 100% increase in decadal warming, for a system as large as earth that is quite massive. Whatever you believe it is hard to deny the earth's climate is changing, whether you believe it is man made or not. The thing that keeps us cool, ice, has been left out in the open and IPCc predictions of 8.5 are starting to become true. Not sure anywhere that IPCC have said 8.5 and now possible above, weren't existential, we are after all talking about temperatures that were around 65 million years ago being reached in under a thousand or at best 2000, I'm not sure either how tens of metres of sea level in that time won't affect everything that know and we will "power through" This is not a case of crash the system or crash through, it will be who can use as much energy as possible to stay alive and when populations depend on that energy and there is no decline in consumption, you can see the end appears quicker.

@jeffwalther2023 You can't add energy to a system without it meaning something and IPCC predictions of 8.5 are coming true sooner than expected if, YOU had actually read them like I have you would know what that means as far as society is concerned the next ten thousand years.

@TTFN55 We don't need to overpower the sun or volcanoes, but we can stop trapping the heat of both of them with the trillions of molecules of stored sunlight that we emit every second.

@annemouse6788 Nuclear produces around 10% of the worlds electricity, electricity is usually less than 20% of most modern countries total energy so let's say 1-2% of energy. To ramp up nuclear would mean with current amount of raw material would mean about 16 years of full production from nuclear. Considering the longevity of the waste and it takes around ten years to build one reactor and due to rising sea levels 2-300 will have to be moved, are you able to justify nuclear over say battery that could be installed immediately and more of them?

@paulwheeler6609 See this is the thing though, I was listening to someone say how little they needed etc etc but they also said how good their life was, that they had everything they needed for them and were trying to sound as though their ego was somehow better than people who didn't have these things but wanted more. I am not having a go at you, personally am in the same boat, have everything I need and trying to live on around 12k a year, but that is easy later in life, certainly not starting out. I have given up the convertible, the jet ski, the motor bike, have closed my business of working at around 165 an hour and the perks that come along with it. These decisions are easy when one has the basics met, when people are put through school, teaching people how to get a job, to earn money to support the system, as a teacher are you better teaching them not to aim for owning a house or teaching them all money is debt and there are other thing to concern ourselves with, by not going to school? Point being, it can take a lifetime to find out the best things are free, so what should you teach them about money?

It would be like saying you can drive wherever you want to because of your job, even though people have been killed over that oil, it does not make sense on a logical or moral standpoint, just excusing the system you choose to be in, that suits your moral code because you only consume a little bit. Exchange oil for child porn or slavery, would just " a little bit" be an excuse?

@paulwheeler6609 I have been in a monetary system, an education system and a general belief system about what is right my whole life, those things were chosen and not by me. As a writer I thought you could explore the thought experiment, without taking it personally enough to not resort to insults. Apologies.

@paulwheeler6609 PS you are in a system, the choice is staying in it. There is nothing in your life that says you need this job or that, you could just as easily be on a property with no cell service, self sufficient for food, don't drive etc etc, these things we do are all ultimately choices. The system you do it in are because of decisions others have made.

@paulwheeler6609 Don't tell people they are being something when they don't have your opinion dressed as fact. Just because you are 67 means what as far as your consumption levels? Does it mean you have more than enough and don't want to draw back, does it mean you are living hand to mouth? Saying I am disingenuous because of your age, is disingenuous of you. If you are able to handle the analogy of cards without overreacting then we can use that. If we all use banker debt and if therefore all money corrupts, how is the world to be created in a beautiful way if we are still gambling?

I said we are and have been part of a system, which you don't admit to and then talk of me not engaging in conversation.. I am honestly not sure what I could have done more to engage in the conversation I started talking about. You tell me you are an outsider of a system that I would say you depend 100% on, you then tell me because of your feelings that you choose to stay in it. In a system you say doesn't exist...help me out here? They create money at a cost of around four cents per hundred dollars and we are forced to hold this debt to eat and it is supposed to be paid back, after we are forced to earn it, full value. This is slavery.
