There is the same amount of energy in a tank of diesel than my entire electrical energy with the air con going 24-7 for 3.2 months over summer in a sub tropical place, a huge amount of energy per tank just to go for an ice cream, how many people will stop driving?

It's more that they don't have a thing to replace oil or the system money depends on. If you have something to replace those and keep the system running they would be keen to hear it, age doesn't replace oil and if the people won't change by themselves a bit harsh to blame people just because they are old, offer something to replace it, even with your actions and I am sure everybody would listen.

@Guvament_bs I'm just the messenger to a paper that describes it and has done the maths, you might want to reconsider your opinion. 2000 is at the fastest rate but a million years isn't mentioned at one degree from memory.

@sertandoom4693 Sure I can waste more time on this, I thought I explained habitat around the world is going to increase, along with nutrient values, I am talking small fish whose habitat has been lost and then of course everything else feeds on top of that all the way up the food chain. If coastal areas are all flooding, nutrient values are going to go up but that doesn't mean they are all going to be full of algae, this is not the gulf of Mexico that is the only area that is defined as coastal. A place in the UK is losing 13 feet a year I think it was, this is not going to have the corresponding fresh water or algae blooms to stop fish taking advantage of that now, pacific islands that are getting flooded aren't inundated with fresh water or acidification to stop fish moving in are they?

@virutech32 Problem is 5999 of the 6000 products that come from a barrel of oil get refined at the same time diesel does. If we want synthetic tyres or asphalt or plastic, diesel then becomes a waste product, we don't get synthetic threads for the bus seats etc without it.

@markwilson1096 I know it's easy to say that but in all reality when you have a network of roads that use asphalt or car tyres that are synthetic rubber or even plastic for batteries that come from the same barrel as diesel or petrol it really is more than funding or profit, take everything away from your life that involves oil, even plastic for medical devices, there won't be much left.

@mescalshown4883 There's a belief that revolutions have never worked unless the bourgeois are in agreement with it, like the enlightenment period meant the end of slavery or another one is nothing really shifts until the middle class do. You have to take these people with you to whatever future there is and calling anybody limpy or privileged isn't going to do it when you're probably creating more problems than fixing them by insulting random people on the internet.

@TwilightMysts I actually said something to that person about their rudeness, it went too far, for no reason but I just wanted to say I have lived this way and still do. It's incredibly cheap, sure there are no cruises, but I've stopped driving, I know food still gets driven to me because I live in a city etc but the energy in a tank of diesel is the same as my total electrical consumption for 3.2 months in a subtropical place with the air con going 24-7. Food and shelter or medical care aren't a great portion of a total nations spending and if we wanted to do that, for everybody, it would make the place better. We spend an amazing amount of energy doing nothing it seems, why not go back to just the basics?

Well, that depends. Coastal areas are going to be inundated with habitat soon for small fish as houses become destroyed, even if a metre is reclaimed that is quite a bit of land globally. As cities become destroyed I can see people living in high rises without power fishing below them and if it gets to that stage you could kiss goodbye a lot of ports and roads.

At 5c it is supposed to take 2000 years for all the ice to melt, the battle might go on a bit longer, I think when some people were born who are alive today it was less than a millimetre per year, 22-23 was 8.1 millimetres, a 800% increase is ok when the figures are small, wonder how long it will take before it's 100 millimetres/10 centimetres per year. They say on average for every 2.5 centimetres up it is supposed to come in 2.5 metres.

@AmyKozerski 145,000 barrels per day of diesel, twice that for petrol and the same for gas, 750,000 barrels a day just for those three not to be burnt and sitting around forever, then the space and the drums to store it in, forever, with over a million barrels used per day globally how much of it do you want to use and then what percentage do you want to store? Is there any logic to your comment that means you know the reality of what we are discussing? Add ; When people get nail polish or make up, should diesel be stored because of this?

@thekingofkingsrp Absolutely hilarious that you think putting everyone in apartments and vehicles with a 500 klm range is a bad thing or the worst that you can imagine. If the state takes care of food, shelter and medical care, for everybody and if everybody doesn't have access to that then they are failing in what we give them power to do. If the state offered these things, for free, because as a percentage of overall emissions it would be around 10%, this would not only increase well being of everybody, it would make that style of living sustainable. Of course it would mean you and everybody has to stop working jobs that do nothing and we would have to take profit out of the reasons we do things but these things could be offered, for free reduce overall emissions by a large percentage and get people more free time, yet here you are complaining about worldwide well being being raised, why? So you can fill up faster when you travel long distances and a bigger house? I mean is that it, that the whole world as we know it, should die over? Don't you think that's just a teensy weensy bit selfish?

@AmyKozerski Oh Ok, a barrel of oil is like a baby, if you want a part of the baby you have to take the whole thing. Oil is a substance and refining oil is done with heat, off comes the things like gas, petrol, diesel first, at the bottom is asphalt and all the 6000 products are between gas and asphalt. Let's say the part you want is item 453 in all those products, it can't be got without oil as a whole. If you remove all the oil related products from your life, clothing etc, all of them come with the corresponding amount of about 45 litres of diesel per barrel

If you mean my comment to someone else that's not for you to defend. From my point of view it seems a lot of people have the answers yet don't seem to understand the problem. The issue is your whole life depends on oil and that is running out, all money is valued on the energy we can buy, soon we won't be able to and we can't use what oil we have otherwise we push the earth into a hothouse earth where the last time the earth went to the temps we are going too, 86% of all species died out, so forgive me if I sound cranky.

@TheFlyingSailorYT Mass transit supports jobs, money is a ticket to energy that can't be used. Better off to get rid of having to travel and food come to cities and people can walk. Imagine living in the 1800's, without jobs what need would we have for mass transport if that energy could go into wind turbines or batteries?

@TwilightMysts Your belief that other people have to have a viable replacement is where you will be let down the most. You are asking for something that replaces what we didn't make in the first place, soon you will have no choice in doing without the things society has been used to for 80 years. It's not a problem with save the world, it's a problem that you expect anything else to do exactly the same thing, we didn't invent oil and we aren't paying the external costs of it and currently people are being killed so you can access it, and then you want a viable replacement before reducing your consumption, it a problem with the world that everything we base our lives on is soon to be gone or we can't use all that we have, not a belief of saving it, the problem is we they have to save you from yourselves because the world isn't doing it willingly.

@SigFigNewton All large business get tax breaks but here's the kicker you are the customer so you benefit. There is no replacement to oil, it gives is the 6000 products our lives depend on. You can't replace oil in your own life, I totally disagree it's funding, even the asphalt to get things to you comes from the same barrel as nylon and there is no feedstock to replace these, considering we didn't produce this. If you think there are choices for all the things we get, present them, half the nitrogen in the world diet comes from natural gas and of all the energy we use solar and wind haven't kept up with demand. We can't fund something more energy dense than something we didn't create, just because we have money to throw at it, because we want it.

@SigFigNewton You seem to be misunderstanding, 6000 products come from something we didn't create, now somehow you think we can create a product that will replace all of them and somehow, cleaner? You're saying as long as we throw money at it then something will be invented out of thin air, that's impossible, so what do you do instead is the question everybody would like answered. If diesel comes from the same barrel as asphalt and plastic, we have to take it all or stop using it completely because if we want diesel asphalt still exists. This isn't about subsidies or investment, this is about the inability to find a replacement that will do all the things oil does.

@SigFigNewton It's the go without those products AND climate issues after we burn them all that will probably happen, All countries, will be affected but there is no chance to create alternatives for all of them as there is no feedstock. When all countries have people moving inland what building materials energy etc will we use, all very scary for what will happen over the next few hundred years.

@sertandoom4693 there are de sal plants running 24-7 now but the point is habitat and food, for every 2.5 centimetres up it is supposed to come in 2.5 metres on an average, for the amount of fresh water coming I don't think even the top 30 cm is going to stop fish taking advantage of new habitat, small fry really to all the destruction I just see coastal fish populations exploding in general.

We run out of oil in four decades and here you are telling me what will happen in how long? 100, 200? If you can prove to me more habitat and nutrient won't mean more smaller fish then you can feel as though you've won the internet points, otherwise appreciate you're just giving your opinion before you ask anybody "what makes you an expert" over something that won't matter to either of us when the time comes, yeah?

@zoeherriot 72 metres is pretty irrelevant one we get past the first metre or two, knowing it will double in speed, It's ok if sea level rise is in the centimetres per decade but when it's metres per decade nowhere will be safe. With oil running out far sooner climate change at least will be slow by our standards.

@zoeherriot Oh well a few hundred years well that will be wonderful when we are only at 5 metres and 90% of all cities are flooded out, my city won't exist in 80 years so...okay.

@zoeherriot Any answer to the question what four times the sea level of the last 140 years in the next 80 will be like and that it will increase the 80 after that, will do to the psychology of all people in the world when they know 72 metres is going to be the end ? When all housing and cities have lost their value? The next 80 years will be the best in maybe forever as far as the climate process in concerned...What happens when flood events of a metre per year happen because that is where the world is going.

@zoeherriot Along with that we must consider that on average for every 25 mm up the coastal erosion is supposed to be 2500mm, so 1 metre up within 80 years, without storm surge would mean the coastline would come in 100 metres.
