Central banks create money at a cost of four cents per hundred dollars and we spend our lives paying it back, full value. If the govt said they will start producing food and give you a card where you can get food half price but only enough food per person in the family, would you use it? All money is debt based meaning new debt always needs to be entered into, in a declining growth world, 10% of the last 80 years moving forward the next 80 years, so new money entering the system always has to happen and 10% of the last 80 years means something, especially as taxes take money out of the system and are high. If new debt isn't being entered into and society is not going to be able to buy the same amount of energy or at least emit it moving forward, money is going to lose its value. Why not tell everybody to stop working and supply everyone per capita an even amount? We could feed, shelter and give medical care for free and control of consumption has to happen on a finite planet, money won't do it.

@AT-os6nb The govt supplies about a third of the money into the system, you could check how much govt spending is done in a year and how much private, as all money is debt based and taxes never are supposed to pay back central bank debt, in fact if all the debt was paid back there would be no money in the system. What do you mean govt spending is socialism, all money is debt, it doesn't matter who inputs it or why, it could be to pay people in the public service to stand on their head and it would matter to the economy. Actually what is socialism to you and how does govt spending define it?

@ That really didn't answer the question. If you have food, and everybody else is at barter stage, I am sure society will change and people grow their own food. Where I am there are creeks plumbed under parks, streets etc, these will be dug up and people go back to planting. The lawn is actually the worlds largest irrigated crop they say, to grow grass, when no herbivores eat it, just to look nice. My point in the question was it is interesting to ponder, once upon a time not too long ago people would know how to make string from grass, now we don't know one grass from another or which is best for it. Just an interesting idea for people to ponder, do we start learning how to make wooden spoons or take the cbdc that can only be spent on food.
