Lake Ayre is salt flats already " The salinity in the lake increases as the 450 mm (18 in) salt crust dissolves over a period of six months of a major flood, resulting in a massive fish kill. When over 4 m (13 ft) deep, the lake is no saltier than the sea, but salinity increases as the water evaporates, with saturation occurring at about a 500 mm (20 in) depth. The lake takes on a pink hue when saturated, due to the presence of beta-carotene pigment caused by the alga Dunaliella salina." Lake eyre basin is five times bigger than UK and the water that goes into can take a couple of months to arrive from the north because Au is so flat, with half a metre of existing salt it might be better getting some new fishing grounds.

Only because it's shallow. dig it deeper and it gets cooler then less evaporation, dig is as deep as we can afford to it would cool down the land. If they wanted to make rain to order they could flood area's with a low amount of water over hot ground. With the amount of salt I wonder if that makes it warmer creating the 2.5 metres per years evaporation, dig the water into deeper areas the evaporation can be cut by half.

@elizabethroberts6215 Quite amazing to think it's all passed through dinosaurs.

The compensation would be a percentage of the waterfront property, should make sure it's all native title first just like the gas fields so then public consultation doesn't need to happen..

It's an area almost five times larger than Uk, just the new settlements on the waterfront and people having sailing regatta's where else do you suggest? ;)
