Except that the German ruling had no practical effect. Constitution may come first, but country's laws cannot break EU treaties either. This is the problem of Poland and Hungary.

@The Big Kiwi That's the goal. How far it gets depends on member states. In my opinion the American federation went too far and federal government is too powerful. EU members are obliged to abide by existing treaties.

100% agreed. Some of the old generation raised in communism are beyond help and hold unbelievably backward opinions. They bash the EU and offer partnership with China and Russia as a replacement. Anyone who cares about democracy cannot take such proposals seriously. It's all Russian propaganda. Poles and Hungarians need to confront it.

I wonder what business what Brits here?

Organizations have rules. Poland's constitution may take precedence, but if Poland breaks EU agreements its continued membership becomes impossible. Same for Hungary. Poles and Hungarians just got manipulated by their governments that the EU is enemy. The EU isn't taking over Czechia, Slovakia or Baltics and they see no need to vote in dictators to "protect" themselves.

@hunguy3280 It is definitely a sovereign right of Poland and Hungary to deal with internal issues. But due to EU memberships those solutions need to be in accordance with EU treaties as long as those countries are members. It's the EU courts who decide on these matters. Poland and Hungary had to adjust their laws prior to accession to the EU for the same reason. Any change of EU treaties would have to be negotiated and approved by all members should Hungary or Poland want to make amendments. That's how EU membership works, even if we dislike it sometimes.

So Americans are reliving their own history?

@julemanden32199 Europeans are good at organization. There would be no EU if there was no need for it. Since there is, they put their differences and nationalism aside.

You need to make a contribution for things to change, not just wait and see. You need to convince your family members to vote otherwise next time.

On the contrary, I think the UK should rejoin!

Countries will never reach the same level of maturity unless external pressure is exerted. It's a lot better to stand up to Hungary and Poland than let Putin have free reign in eastern Europe.

Looks like Europeans need American help again!
