  5.  @invidusspectator3920  The problem is this region is of very little economic significance for the EU. Population is too small which means small markets, countries are too poor, too much corruption, too much nationalism. The EU needs a reform before it can admit new members as well, so both sides are not ready at the moment. Even if Balkan joins the EU it will be very difficult to catch up with V4 + Baltics. They sadly made wrong decisions after 1989.

  6. The EU needs to sort out problems with Hungary and Poland first before taking in more members. Internal reforms are needed to make punishment for breaking of EU treaties more effective.

  11.  @val-schaeffer1117  This shouldn't be a problem for anyone who studied German in elementary school. You just need to lookup some vocabulary. B1 level should be sufficient to get started. A bigger problem is reaching C1 level, necessary for getting subsequent job. C2 level is luxury almost nobody will ever need.

  14. You could be subject to age discrimination, as companies may find it suspicious why someone so experienced is looking for a job in another country. Expect low response ratio, but if you persevere, it shouldn't be impossible. To get started, B1 level should be sufficient. After a few years of living in Germany you should be B2. That should qualify you for permanent residence. If you would like to move to another country, the easiest path will be to get employed by an international company and ask for relocation. Interestingly, I found my next job in the UK and will be moving there.

  15.  @val-schaeffer1117  It depends on occupation. Many jobs don't require C1 level of German. I find it natural that Germany wants you to learn German. It would be good to clarify language expectations during interview not to get a nasty surprise later.

  16.  @TheRomanianfalcon  If you're unhappy with German taxation, compare it with Sweden or Canada. It is common in developed countries that social security systems help lift the poor by taking from the rich. If that's a problem for you, I understand those countries may not be a good fit for you culturally and you would be better off in US.

  17.  @SchwarzeKatter  I love it how people make assumptions in comments. I'm well aware that small countries are better at foreign languages, as that is a necessity to build a competitive economy. Netherlands is one of EU countries I would definitely recommend for immigration. There is one disadvantage for small countries though, as one reaches more senior position, the local job market may not offer sufficient opportunities. This will be more of a problem in smaller countries population wise such as Austria or Sweden and less so in Netherlands.

IT specialists may be earning good salaries in Eastern EU, but not other professions which makes it a poor choice for life in the long term. If you want to live in a country that will always be well off, where decisions will be made then that country is Germany, not Romania.

  23.  @TheRomanianfalcon  In 2022 Germany had $64,000 GDP (PPP) per capita while Romania had $38,000. It's even worse in nominal value. This means an average German worker is much better off than a Romanian one. In certain sectors such as IT it may be reversed, but not every child of yours is going to work in that sector. Available data doesn't support your statement.

Millions of people would like to move to Germany but few to Romania. They know why. Romania faces brain drain while Germany benefits. Poor countries are poor because people living there keep making bad decisions. If Switzerland is that good, I wonder why haven't you moved there yet.

  27.  @RazorMouth  I have applied for jobs in various EU countries in the past few months including Ireland but mostly they weren't interested in workers from other EU countries. In the end I ended up finding a job in the UK instead. My salary expectations were about €120k. Maybe I was considered too experienced and too expensive.

  37. Oh Polish businesses do. Fine should be subtracted from EU funds granted to Poland. That means fine takes priority over any funds you get. The difference is to be paid by Polish government putting strain on your budget.

Poland is a free country and there are other alternatives like a close union with Belarus, Russia, China.

It's your choice if you want to be part of that club instead. We stand on the side of law and order which is the EU. If Poland thinks it can ignore that there will be fines to pay for sure.

After this experience I will not be considering Ireland and other EU countries again as I would be just wasting my time. No wonder the EU lags behind the US economically. There is no way it can catch up. The fact that I can ask for 120k tells I have plenty of experience. In the end I ended up getting much more in the UK.

  63.  @pixel8ated  Moving to the UK from the EU for work is totally out of question after Brexit. It's a too small country to be worth it. Having British citizenship is of limited value now. Basically same like Canadian or Australian citizenship. For anyone from the EU it would be a step back in terms of career opportunities. Only the US can compete with the EU, however US is becoming a 3rd world country lately.
