Small farmers couldn't compete with slave labor and many plebs were jobless. Veterans were disgruntled because the government often failed to pay their salaries and pensions (Sound familiar? Illegal immigration/shipping jobs overseas/bankrupt VA ). They were patricians but advocated reforms for the working class. Their fellow elites hated them and saw them as class traitors. (Obvious parallel with Trump). At first the senate fought them politically and slandered them (Trump right now) but when that didn't work they had them assassinated. After that civil war was inevitable. A generation later Marius and Sulla's troops were fighting in the streets of Rome A generation after that Julius Caesar was hailed as a liberator from the corrupt elites when he marched on Rome and declared himself dictator.
