My grandmother died recently at age 101. I made a point to ask her about her early life and family history before she passed. Her dad (my greatgrandfather who died before I was born) was a successful businessman who travelled between China, Japan and Canada and made high-end clothes. She remembered as a teen in 1930's China, a Japanese plane dropped a bomb in their neighborhood and they had to evacuate to a bomb shelter. Her dad owned some factories near Hong Kong which survived the war, but he lost everything after the CCP took over in the 1950's and decided to move to Canada permanently and start over.
